GWS Giants captain Tony Greene speaks publicly for first time after club’s Wacky Wednesday drama

GWS captain Toby Greene has spoken publicly for the first time on the club’s infamous Wacky Wednesday, admitting his regrets about the controversial event.

Toby Greene doubts the Giants will be involved in any extravagant post-season gatherings in 2025 following the club’s Wacky Wednesday scandal.

Six players were suspended and seven players were fined following an event in a Sydney CBD hotel that featured inappropriate costumes and skits.

Youngster Josh Fahey was the hardest hit with a four-match ban, while Greene copped a $5,000 fine for not stepping up as a leader and halting the actions.

The captain’s sanction was initially $20,000 before it was negotiated down with the AFL.

Speaking to Channel 7 Melbourne on Friday, Greene confirmed the playing group has learned from the incident and that “mistakes” were made.

“There’s things we could have done better, myself and as a club,” Greene said.

“We learned them throughout the process and I guess all we can do is make sure it doesn’t happen again and get a lot better from it.

Toby Greene has conceded the Giants should have been better.

“There were just a few mistakes leading into it and how it played out. The way we finished the season, no one really anticipated being there on that day.

“We wish we could have been better. I learned a lot from it to be honest. Really disappointing.”

The Giants’ antics have raised the question of whether dressing up for Mad Mondays will be a thing of the past. While Greene wasn’t prepared to end the ritual completely, he did sense the club would be more sensible with its behaviour in 12 months.

“I’ll just go with the flow,” he said.

“I don’t think we’ll be doing too much next year.”
