Carlton could further investigate Dale Thomas over a drinking incident at a charity event two nights before the Blues’ loss to St Kilda - and Blues football director Chris Judd says the veteran should know better.
Judd claimed he did not have details of the embattled club’s investigation into allegations the veteran utility had too much to drink and was involved in an incident with former Blue Robbie Warnock at a Camp Quality charity function in Melbourne, but acknowledged the “optics are poor”.
MIDSEASON DRAFT: WHO YOUR CLUB PICKED
“Even if it’s two wines over dinner, I get it, it’s not the end of the world, but the optics are poor,” Judd said on Nine’s Footy Classified.
“I’m not one to infantise players. If players have a single beer or a couple of wines over dinner, I don’t have a huge problem.
“Needless to say, drinking, full stop, in public, two days before a game, when you’re 1-9, fails the stupidity test, clearly.
“We’ll wait and see what the result of the investigations are.”
Nine reports Thomas told the club he only had a couple of drinks.
PAY UP: THOMAS FINED FOR UMPIRE ABUSE
Asked whether the 31-year-old should be ruled out of next weekend’s clash with Essendon at the MCG, Judd said that was not a board decision and would be left up to the players.
“To be honest, if someone’s having a glass of wine over dinner, I don’t think it’s a heinous crime and I don’t think there should be any punishment for it,” he said.
Thomas had 13 disposals and took five marks in the Blues’ 13-point loss to the Saints on the weekend.
It comes on the back of Thomas being slapped with a $7500 fine for calling an umpire a “F***ing cheat” in the Blues’ humiliating Round 9 loss to GWS.
