AFL round 13 teams: Clayton Oliver out, Marc Pittonet out for Blues as SOS earns reprieve

Jack Silvagni has earned a reprieve from the Blues, coming back into Carlton’s side to face the Bombers. See the full Sunday sides here.

Jack Silvagni’s rollercoaster season has continued with the uncontracted utility winning the last place in Carlton’s team for Sunday night’s clash against Essendon.

Silvagni was dropped on Friday for the second time in three games – but that was reversed on Saturday morning when ruckman Marc Pittonet failed a fitness test on his hand.

Silvagni, 25, went goalless for three consecutive weeks and was then dropped, with the Blues wanting to reprogram him as a defender.

It’s understood the coaching group believed Silvagni had a sound understanding of the club’s defensive system and would be reliable by foot behind the ball.

But after just one VFL game as a defender Silvagni was thrust back into the AFL line-up against Melbourne due to Pittonet’s hand injury.

Footy greats including Tony Shaw and Brad Johnson rate Silvagni highly and have been surprised at how the Blues have used him.

Silvagni has played 110 games but has never really been allowed to settle into one position.

Luke Hodge also questioned why the Blues axed 2017 top draft picks Paddy Dow and Lochie O’Brien for 33-year-old Ed Curnow.

“Dow did nothing wrong last week – nine touches in a quarter (as the sub) for a team that was poor,” Hodge said on SEN.

Essendon will be without Dylan Shiel due to injury, while Andrew Phillips makes way for the return of spearhead Peter Wright.

North Melbourne has again left Ben Cunnington out of its best 22, naming the veteran midfielder among the emergencies for its match against GWS.

Paul Curtis is into the Roos’ side, with Jy Simpson and Hugh Greenwood missing due to injury.

OLIVER RULED OUT AS HOSPITAL STAY CONTINUES

Melbourne superstar Clayton Oliver is still in hospital with an infected blister and won’t play against Collingwood on Monday.

Oliver is receiving medical treatment and has been ruled out by the Demons.

The superstar ballwinner will not train as part of the main session on Friday and will attempt to play after the bye against Geelong on Thursday night in Round 14.

Oliver is also on the way back from a hamstring injury.

He trained fully on Saturday but missed training on Wednesday and Friday due to the blister infection and hospitalisation for antibiotic treatment.

Captain Max Gawn told Triple M on Thursday that Oliver’s recovery from the blister had gone “pear-shaped”.

“Yeah, it’s Clayton. He has played about 150 games in a row until this hamstring. We have to make sure the hamstring is right. It was going to be ok to play but he hasn’t trained for two or three days so I dare say he’s out today and he will train tomorrow.”

The Demons also have to find replacements for Jake Bowey (concussion) and James Harmes (suspension).

Michael Hibberd should return for Bowey after overcoming soreness.

PIES HAVE FULL FAITH IN DE GOEY AHEAD OF EXTENDED BREAK

Collingwood star Jordan De Goey is likely to be given an extended break from the club as he serves a three-match suspension and has the full trust of coach Craig McRae despite his chequered past.

McRae says the club will not seek to impose parameters on how De Goey can spend his time off after the 27-year-old landed himself in hot water on overseas trips to New York and Bali in late 2021 and the mid-season break last year.

De Goey was handed a three-week ban for his high bump on West Coast youngster Elijah Hewett in Perth, with his coach saying the “flip side” of the suspension was the powerful midfielder could complete a rigorous block of training when he returns from his holiday.

McRae said the star’s training block at the same time in 2022 contributed towards his best form of the season in the Magpies’ run home, with De Goey a standout in the first two finals.

“Jordy is going to have some time away from the club potentially and then we get back to work,” he said.

Jordan De Goey was suspended for three matches for this bump on Elijah Hewett.

“I saw last year Jordan with a bit of a spell and then a mini pre-season really spiked come September time, so we’ll be hoping for something similar.”

When asked if De Goey’s movements would be restricted by the club on his break, McRae said: “I’ve got absolute trust in Jordy.”

He hinted he was disappointed with the pointed West Australian coverage of De Goey’s bump on Hewett but said he would not comment on West Coast’s unusual social media posts in connection to the incident and tribunal appearance.

“Like I said after the game, our attention goes to young Hewett and hopefully he’s fine,” he said.

“I don’t think there’s any winners in this, I think the headlines looked a little bit like there’s a win for someone, but we don’t look at it that way.”

LIPINSKI POISED FOR FIRST GAME OF YEAR

Collingwood could turn to Patrick Lipinski for his first game of the season in Monday’s King’s birthday clash against the Dees after Jordan De Goey was handed a three-match ban.

Magpies coach Craig McRae is confident Lipinski has plenty to offer after missing the first half of the season due to a shoulder injury he suffered during a practice match in March.

“He’s done a power of work,” McRae said.

“He’s actually done more work in the last month than he did in the pre-season which is exciting for us.

“His running capability, what he does to a team, he just picks himself regardless of how long he’s been out of the team.

But McRae said De Goey would be missed.

“I don’t think we can replace him but we’ve got players that can play different roles,” he said.

The Pies will also be boosted by the availability of Dan McStay who ruptured a tendon in his finger in round 5.

Decisions on the fitness of Beau McCreary and Will Hoskin-Elliot will be made later in the week while Jeremy Howe remains a few weeks away.

Monday night also marks the first time that Melbourne ruckman Brodie Grundy faces his former side but McRae says there won’t be any pre-match communication.

“I won’t make contact with him but I’ve always wanted the best for Brodie that will never waiver,” he said.

“Obviously tough decisions are needed to be made to do what we think is the best for the future of our footy club.

“On a personal level I’m rapt that he’s playing well.”

Melbourne have been dominated of late in this fixture only winning one of the past eight against the Pies, although they will be buoyed by the possible return of star midfielder Clayton Oliver.

“We know what we’re in for,” McRae said.

“Typical Demon team, just really hard to play against.”

Collingwood will hope to extend its lead at the top of the ladder and go nine unbeaten.
