AFL 2023: All the ins and outs and full round 19 teams
St Kilda coach Ross Lyon hasn’t exactly swung the axe like he threatened to. Instead, a former Blue has paid the price for what happened last week. See the full Sunday teams.

Ross Lyon has pulled back from his threat to make a statement at selection against North Melbourne after only dropping Saints pair Liam Stocker and Ryan Byrnes.
Lyon said this week he had spoken to his players after a disastrous loss to Gold Coast and made clear “there needs to be some changes” to the team.
“We‘ve been quite stable but there’s people that have played well and are in form that we’ll bring in,” Lyon said.
But on Friday night he demoted only first-year Saint Stocker and improving midfielder Byrnes to make space for Jack Higgins (knee) as he returns from injury as well as Jack Bytel.
St Kilda enters the weekend in sixth spot on the ladder but with ninth-placed Carlton only half a game behind Lyon’s flagging side.
SCROLL DOWN FOR THE FULL ROUND 19 TEAMS
North Melbourne recalled veteran ruckman Todd Goldstein for the clash against St Kilda after injuries to Callum Coleman-Jones (concussion) and Cam Zurhaar (ankle).
Tristan Xerri is still in the Roos side to ruck alongside Goldstein, who will play his first game since round 16.
North Melbourne managed former skipper Jack Ziebell and lost George Wardlaw to a hamstring strain, with Charlie Lazzaro and Will Phillips back into the side.
Melbourne dropped Charlie Spargo for the clash against Adelaide for Kade Chandler as Adam Tomlinson replaces Harrison Petty (ribs).
Opponent Adelaide recalled Matt Crouch as one of four changes, with Max Michalanney managed and Rory Laird’s absence with injury confirmed.
Another Giant goes down at training
- Lachlan McKirdy
The Giants’ injury woes have continued with key forward Jesse Hogan picking up an issue with his quad at training this week.
Hogan started the year with one of the best injury-free runs of his career but missed their home clash against Fremantle in round 14 with calf soreness.
“It’s unfortunate to lose Jesse this week but we covered a few late outs last week,” said Adam Kingsley.
“I expect our whole forward line to step up in his absence and put in a good performance against the Suns.”
Hogan adds to a growing injury room of late that includes gun midfielder Tom Green, Lachie Keeffe and Xavier O’Halloran.
Thankfully for the Giants, they will be boosted by the return of Finn Callaghan.
Dealing with a hip flexor injury, Callaghan was a late scratching for the win over the Crows. However, he has been named to play after a solid week at training.
Nick Haynes also comes back into the side following his one-match suspension.
“It’s great to welcome back Nick Haynes from suspension and Finn Callaghan after we managed him last week,” Kingsley said.
“They’re both important parts of our side and I expect them to have an impact on Sunday afternoon. “
Jacob Wehr (omitted) is the player to make way, while Josh Fahey has been named as the sub.
Blue blow, Pies load up for Power, no room for Rory at Dogs
– Jay Clark and Callum Dick
Carlton will be without superstar captain Patrick Cripps and Adam Cerra for Saturday’s clash against West Coast as part of what the club hopes will be short break for the pair.
Cripps has not trained this week after suffering a corked leg in the shock win over Port Adelaide but remains on track to play Collingwood next weekend.
Cerra suffered hamstring tightness against the Power and will also attempt to take on the Magpies but will have to prove his fitness on the track first next week.
The decision to give Cripps the week off to overcome the cork looks like a calculated call from Michael Voss as the Blues eye a remarkable run home to the finals.
Carlton need to win five of its last six matches but will be without spearhead Harry McKay who will be sidelined for six to eight matches with a meniscus injury.
Voss’s men are on a roll after chalking up their fourth-straight win and will rely on a youthful midfield including Paddy Dow, Ollie Hollands and Tom De Koning to topple last-placed West Coast at Marvel Stadium.
Western Bulldogs have brought in four players to help defeat Essendon including Josh Bruce and Bailey Smith after missing with illness last week.
All eyes will be on Smith’s position and whether he returns to the engine room after he was linked to a trade move to Geelong last week due to frustrations about being left out of the midfield group.
Rory Lobb also remains on the outer after crossing from Fremantle, with Buku Khamis named to bolster the aerial power instead.
Essendon was thrilled to name Nik Cox for his first game in more than one year along with ruckman Andrew Phillips in place of dumped forward Sam Weideman, Jye Menzie and Nick Hind.
Dylan Shiel was also left out for the second week in a row as he battles a lower leg issue, the club said.
Collingwood has welcomed back twin towers Darcy Cameron and Brody Mihocek at the expense of Billy Frampton, Oleg Markov and Ash Johnson for the blockbuster against Port Adelaide.
The changes show the extraordinary depth the Magpies have as they attempt to run deep into September as this year’s outright premiership favourite.
Richmond dumped Maurice Rioli after another quiet game against West Coast last week as the Tigers prepare for the Hawks on Saturday afternoon at the MCG. Rioli was also in focus after snubbing a call from the coaches after he was subbed off last week. Rhyan Mansell replaces him.
Geelong was unchanged after back-to-back thrashings of Essendon and North Melbourne.
Esava Ratugolea was left out of the defensive setup amid strong interest from Poet Adelaide.
There are suggestions the Cats’ defence is better without him, fuelling beliefs he could be traded to the Power.
North Melbourne has lost three key players to injury for Sunday’s clash against St Kilda, including Jy Simpkin, Cameron Zurhaar and Callum Coleman-Jones.
St Kilda left out debutant Jack Peris but will boost the forward half regaining Jack Higgins.
Sydney Swans have welcomed back star midfielder Chad Warner and defensive playmaker Jake Lloyd for Saturday night’s clash against Fremantle.
Warner has recovered from a calf injury and will significantly bolster the midfield as the Swans attempt to notch a second-straight win in the west.
Lloyd was concussed by Richmond Toby Nankervis as part of a heavy bump two weeks ago and will take up an important role alongside Dane Rampe whose suspension for a head-high bump was overturned by the AFL tribunal this week.
The Swans have omitted Chad’s brother, Corey, and left out tagger Ryan Clarke and injured big man Lewis Melican.
The Swans would need to win their last six games of the season to crash into the top-eight after an injury-marred season trying to avenge last year’s Grand Final defeat to Geelong.
GWS Giants have named slick midfielder Finn Callaghan, out-of-favour defender Nick Haynes and big man Matt Flynn as part of an extended bench for Sunday’s clash against Gold Coast.
The Giants are shooting for their sixth-straight win as part of a strong bounce back from Adam Kingsley’s men and will eye another victory in Canberra which keeps their slim finals hopes alive.
Midfielder Jarryd Lyons has been dumped on his birthday to make way for the return of star onballer Josh Dunkley as Brisbane readies its preliminary final revenge plot for the Cats on Saturday.
Lyons came into the side when Dunkley was sidelined with a calf injury a fortnight ago and had averaged 24 disposals, five tackles and five clearances in that time.
But he will celebrate his 31st birthday in the stands, with coach Chris Fagan making two changes to the side that was overrun by Melbourne last Friday night.
Utility Cal Ah Chee returns after two weeks out and comes in for Zac Bailey (calf).
Bailey will have scans in the coming days to confirm the severity of the injury.
It’s the third calf issue to hit the Lions in recent weeks, following from Dunkley and Dayne Zorko.
Meanwhile Gold Coast is set take an unchanged line-up into Sunday’s clash against GWS at Manuka Oval, with interim coach Steven King preferring to stick with the side that outmuscled St Kilda.
The Suns named an extended interchange bench on Thursday night with Jy Farrar, Malcolm Rosas, Chris Burgess and James Tsitas all included.
