AFL 2022: All the latest contract and trade news

A stunning form reversal and his capacity to avoid trouble has Jordan De Goey back in the good books at Collingwood. But a looming new contract is set to have strict guidelines.

Collingwood is confident Jordan De Goey will remain at the Pies if he is prepared to accept behavioural clauses in an incentive-based new deal.

De Goey is keen to stay at Collingwood and the free agent will likely be offered a deal close to the one that was withdrawn after his Bali nightclub escapade, expected to be two years at $800,000 a season.

The Pies will wait until the end of the year to negotiate that deal, which would need full board approval given his trail of incidents across his career.

De Goey’s outstanding form and his capacity to avoid controversy since his Bali trip has helped bring about a dramatic change in heart by the Pies.

De Goey and his manager Ryan Vague are understood to both believe his best prospects of maximising his career are at Pies where he can play on a big stage and as a highly marketable Collingwood star.

St Kilda is his likely landing point if he leaves, but the Saints board is yet to approve a full-blown attempt to secure his services.

De Goey could be offered $800,000 a season across as many as five years at St Kilda.

The Collingwood deal would have triggers relating to his off field conduct and potentially penalty clauses for any future transgressions.

The Pies on Monday signed free agent Jamie Elliott for three more seasons after his brilliant season including 21 games as well as the matchwinner in the clash against Essendon.

Elliott would have had suitors if he decided to move on but the 29-year-old fan favourite will now spend his entire career at the Pies.

Pies football boss Graham Wright said of Elliott: “We’re pleased to extend Jamie for another three years, and to hopefully see him play out his career at the club. Jamie is an instrumental figure in our program. Across 11 seasons he has a wealth of football smarts which is invaluable to the youth of our group.”

Winning a premiership at Collingwood in coming years would also help his brand as the Saints continue to battle to establish their premiership credentials.

From a list management perspective keeping De Goey is also smarter business than outlaying multiple picks for an inside midfielder like GWS onballer Tim Taranto.

De Goey’s free agency compensation would be off-set by the arrival of Brisbane key forward Dan McStay, meaning the Pies would effectively let him go for almost nothing.

GWS small forward Bobby Hill is also destined to get to Collingwood next season as the Pies aggressively improve their list.

The Pies were keen on Hill last year when his trade to Essendon was aborted and they love his speed and elite kicking skills.

He is yet to blossom as a footballer after injuries and a testicular cancer diagnosis this year but the Pies believe he has the potential to add to a forward line that includes Jack Ginnivan, Jamie Elliott, Ollie Henry, Beau McCreery, Will Hoskin Elliott and Beau McCreery.

‘Forever in debt to them’: Baz repays Dogs with new deal

One of this year’s hottest uncontracted stars has been taken off the table, with Western Bulldogs young gun Bailey Smith inking a new deal with the club.

Smith will remain a Bulldog until at least the end of 2024 after signing a two-year contract extension on Monday.

The Bulldogs and Smith’s management had been working to secure a deal over recent months, with talks being unaffected by off-field issues.

Smith received a two-match suspension from the AFL in June for conduct unbecoming after photos and video emerged of him taking an illicit drug, which he owned up to in an exclusive interview with the Herald Sun.

The midfielder was also suspended for headbutting Geelong’s Zach Tuohy in Round 12, but has played an important role for the Bulldogs since returning to the field over the past four weeks.

The 21-year-old has averaged 30.3 disposals, 6.1 inside-50s, 3.8 clearances and 550 metres gained from his 14 matches this season.

“I don’t want to be anywhere else – I am stoked to call this home for another two years,” Smith said.

“We have such strong bonds with the place – you can’t envision yourself doing anything else. The people in the club have stuck by me, I’ll be forever in debt to them.

“It wasn’t even in question to go anywhere else, purely because the people here have helped form arguably the most important years of my life.

“From when I got here when I was 17 to now be 21 – the people that have supported me through thick and thin. All the amazing times I have had with my best mates – it was a major part of why I couldn’t go anywhere else.”

Smith said he was confident the Bulldogs – who remain a finals chance with two rounds to go – could enjoy some success in the not-too-distant future.

“A massive goal of ours is sustained success,” he said.

“It’s exciting the next couple of years to see what we can do.”

The No. 7 draft pick in the 2018 national draft, Smith played a key role in the Bulldogs’ finals campaign last year, including a 23-disposal and four-goal preliminary final against Port Adelaide.

Bulldogs list boss Sam Power said the club was “thrilled” with the signature.

“Bailey has established himself as a consistent performer for the football club and has become one of the most exciting young players within the competition,” Power said.

“Bailey has been firm on his commitment to the Western Bulldogs and is focused on the Club building sustained success, both on and off the field.

“At only 21 years of age, we believe Bailey can still improve and he will leave no stone unturned to get the best out of himself and the team.

“Our members and supporters can look forward to cheering on our number six for years to come.”
