Nick Haynes’ masterly sense of direction is already up in lights at Giants Stadium.
Now the defender-cum documentary maker has his eyes on starring in and then producing a blockbuster triumph full of familiar names — with a release date of September 28.
No title yet but the man who now expects to be a Giant “for life” sees an exciting drama, a packed house at the MCG and a sea of joyous faces in orange and charcoal.
It will follow his impressive first feature currently showing ahead of each home game — the club’s Acknowledgement of Country (watch in the player above) featuring indigenous stars Zac Williams, Jeremy Finlayson and Ian Hill.
“I have an interest in videography and video,” Haynes told The Saturday Telegraph. “We’re encouraged at the club to do something outside of football. I got involved with our Acknowledgement of Country, was lucky enough to put in all together and it was shown for round one. It was pretty humbling and hopefully I can do a few more.”
Sports documentaries are his passion and he’d love nothing more than to put a special one together later this year. He knows the cast he wants — he works with them every day. There’s just the small matter of the Hollywood ending — namely a Giants flag.
“I’d love to do a real emotional long video of sport, that would be the pinnacle,” he said.
“I’m thinking a Giants one. It’d be nice to win the flag this year and I could do a nice hour doco from the start, get some old footage and interview the players. I’ve got that in my head at the moment.”
But before the (grand) final edit, the groundwork needs to be laid and that means winning football matches.
The Giants defender makes his first start of the campaign on Saturday as Leon Cameron’s team tackles reigning premier the West Coast Eagles and look to build on their impressive opening round thrashing of Essendon.
Haynes has overcome a back problem to take his place in the side and he’s expecting the toughest of tests.
“It’s a massive challenge,” Haynes said. “If we can go over there and get the win it will give us great confidence for the rest of the year,” he said.
“We think we can play anywhere in the country, come up against hostile crowds and still be able to play our best footy.
“Teams that rock up showing the effort (as in the win over Essendon) and wanting to win that contested ball are most likely going to win the game. We know West Coast’s going to bring that and we’ll look to as well. It’s going to go right down to the wire.”
Haynes penned a new five-year contract back in February and is happy at the prospect of becoming a Giant for life.
“It will take me through to the age of 32,” he said. “I got drafted the first year. From there to now is a massive difference in culture, facilities, coaching staff, the fans and I just wanted to repay the club for the faith they’ve shown me and how much they’ve impacted me as a person and a player.
“It’s just a real positive club to be around and I couldn’t see myself going any other way. There wasn’t much thinking about it after being offered five years. Hopefully the next five years we can win that premiership to top it off.”
