IT was a big first Sunday of the AFL season for 2017 with West Coast, Adelaide and Geelong recording big victories.

The Eagles defeated a youthful Kangaroos team without veterans Brent Harvey, Drew Petrie, Michael Firrito and Nick Dal Santo, while the Crows put the early premiership favourites the Giants to the sword at Adelaide Oval.

And to close out the opening round of the season, in which the AFL attendance record of 371,212 set in Round 15 2013 was smashed, the Cats thumped the Dockers at Subiaco.

The new record is 400,401.
