GIANTS coach Leon Cameron says if he doesn’t get his team selection right the Swans will smell blood and go in for the kill in Saturday’s elimination final.
Cameron faces a dilemma with as many as seven players who would normally be in his best 22 available to return from injury but he knows to pick any more than two would be a real risk.
Toby Greene, Zac Williams, Brett Deledio, Ryan Griffen, Matt deBoer, Aidan Corr and Sam Taylor are all putting their hands up for inclusion.
“We need those guys that do come in to play the whole game and not fall short half way through the last quarter because they will capitalise on it, sense the kill and go in for it,” Cameron said.”
“We will pick the side which we know can go the distance. You know what you are going to get from Sydney and that’s 120 minutes of brutal footy.”
The only player Cameron would commit to playing was Williams who has made a remarkable comeback from what looked to be a season ending Achilles rupture in February this year.
“Barring injury during the week Zac will play on the weekend,” Cameron said.
“The advantage Zac has is he’s got six weeks of training and two weeks of footy under his belt. When you start your year off you think your best 22 might be this but when you get to the end of the year your best 22 is something totally different.”
When the Giants and Swans met in round 22 at Spotless Stadium it was a ferocious battle in the midfield with over 200 contested possessions for the match.
The Swans won by 20 points edging the Giants 158-148 at the contest and 76-66 in the tackle count.
Cameron was happy to go toe to toe with Sydney in their area of strength and play one-on-one all over the ground. It didn’t work for them three weeks ago but the Giants coach says there is little choice in finals footy.
“I don’t think there is any other way,” Cameron said.
“If you try to play too many tricks in finals you don’t get away with it. Our brand over the last three months has been about the contest, providing really good habits around the stoppages and everyone playing their role.
The Swans have been doing that for 10 years and then some, they’ve been doing it really well. If you become too pretty in finals footy you don’t get away with it.
We will be going in full steam ahead because we need to win the contest. We need to tackle better than we did in round 22 and they were better at that than us.
I know that all that sounds simple and it’s olden day footy talk but that’s what happens when September comes around.”
