GWS star Jeremy Cameron says he won’t rush decision on his future

GWS star Jeremy Cameron says he’s taken time to develop his leadership skills – and he expects to take his time as his contract with the Giants heads towards its end date.

Jeremy Cameron won’t be rushing into a decision on his future but is adamant his elevation to the Giants leadership group can take his game to the next level.

The 2019 Coleman Medallist joins Toby Greene and Lachie Whitfield in stepping up to assist captain Stephen Coniglio this season.

“It’s something I’ve been building to for a little while,” said the forward, whose current deal expires at the end of the 2020 campaign.

“It’s a really good opportunity for me and hopefully it can take my footy to another level again,” Cameron said.

“Some guys are really good leaders straight away and some guys take some time, I think that’s definitely been my case.

“I’ve been working on it behind the scenes a little bit myself and out there on game day. I really enjoy trying to set up the guys (forwards) and make sure we’re all in the right spots.”

Cameron is out of contract at the end of the season and he’s comfortable that the issue won’t become a huge distraction.

“It’s an honour to be in the leadership group and have the guys vote you in. It’s a privilege,” he said.

“Definitely pretty happy with the way things are going. Definitely no timeline (on contract resolution). Some people get it done really quick, some don’t. Things are ticking away nicely, speaking to the right people and it’s all looking positive.

“It’s definitely not a decision I want to run into and make straight away. You’re entitled to take your time and I’ll be doing that. At the same time I want to make sure I can do my job on the track week in, week out and play the best footy I can.”

Cameron, who says the whole group is hungry to kick on this year, is delighted Greene is also a member of the leadership group.

“He’s a really well loved player inside this group,” he said.

“Everyone jumps on his back. He led the team when everyone was down and out, all our leaders were out and Toby stepped up. He’s a leader in his own right anyway. I’m sure it’s an easy step up for him and his football is going to go to another level. He’s flying, he’s come back in really good nick. He’s one of a number of guys that are going to step up again this year.”

Cameron added that leadership consultant Cooper Cronk had “a lot of tricks up his sleeve” and was willing to pass them on.

“Looking forward to having many more discussions with him.”
