GWS Giants receive a double re-signing boost, but will be without Toby Greene for Geelong clash

GWS are set to lose Toby Greene for the third straight week, but new signing Matt de Boer has promised to keep his tagging up against Geelong despite the fallout from his Dustin Martin assignment.

De Boer on tagging Dusty

GWS Giants ace Toby Greene looks set to be ruled out of the blockbuster clash against Geelong on Saturday, but tagging king Matt de Boer has declared he’s ready for a potential duel with Patrick Dangerfield.

On the day Richmond star Dustin Martin was fined $7500 ($5000 suspended) for losing his head as a result of de Boer’s unrelenting pressure, his nemesis was rewarded with a one-year contract extension by the Giants.

Adam Kennedy, fresh from giving evidence at the AFL tribunal after copping a high shot from Martin during his meltdown last week, has also been extended by GWS for a further two years, in a coincidental sidebar to the Dusty saga.

This is now set to be Greene’s third straight week on the sidelines with a sore calf, and GWS will miss their small forward strike weapon against the powerful Cats.

Richmond and Dustin Martin’s manager have squarely pointed the finger at de Boer for bearing responsibility for the Tigers’ brain explosion — but the Giant says he won’t be intimidated into changing what he believes is a fair brand of tagging.

“I always play fairly and I'm comfortable with the way I played, so I wouldn't see the need for there to be any reaction (from the umpires)," he said.

"I haven't bought into any of that to be honest, so I'll leave it at that."

Brilliant Cats’ onballer Dangerfield shapes as de Boer’s next potential assignment with the Giants adamant a tagging game works against the game’s superstars.

"He's a matchwinner and a line-breaker, but he's one of a few that Geelong have got (in form) at the moment," de Boer said.

"Whether it's him or (Tim) Kelly or (Joel) Selwood or (Sam) Menegola, they've got a plethora of midfielders there that we'll put some time into.”
