GWS forward Matt de Boer says teammate Jeremy Cameron is now a ‘complete package’
Matt de Boer says Jeremy Cameron is now the complete package, but the kid from country Victoria isn’t getting carried away. And that’s despite some pretty big wraps from back in his home state.
Matt de Boer insists Jeremy Cameron is so much more than a goal machine for the high-flying Giants — he has become the complete package.
And as the plaudits flow and suitors grow, GWS director Jimmy Bartel has questioned why the competition’s leading marksman would want to go anywhere else.
Cameron’s six-goal haul in Saturday’s win over St Kilda saw him hit 30 goals for the season, with talk turning to cracking the magic ton by the end of the campaign.
He scored a perfect 10 from the AFL Coaches Association for his contribution against the Saints, the second time this season he has earned top marks.
And such is his form, one former favourite has labelled Cameron the “best player in the competition right now”.
As Cameron looks to add to his tally when the Giants tackle Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday, de Boer said the 26-year-old’s contribution across all areas was what made him such a key member of the side, that and acknowledging the crucial role others play.
“In terms of the goals, it obviously comes from the supply from the midfield and the pressure around him,” de Boer said.
“He acknowledges that and he’s ruthless when it comes to finishing. He prides himself on that but what he gives to us defensively is huge as well, so he’s that complete player now.”
And as talk intensifies of rival clubs desperate to prise him away, de Boer says there’s no danger of all the ‘noise’ turning Cameron’s head.
“He just goes about his business, loves getting out on his boat doing his fishing, taking his dog for a walk as well. The boys, we keep him grounded don’t worry about that,” he said.
That laid-back attitude is one reason why Giants director Bartel is not losing any sleep over talk surrounding Cameron’s future.
“It’s like he’s a country footballer. He’s like a guy from the 80s and 90s. He loves going to training, he trains hard and then he loves whipping out on his boat getting out between the heads there at Sydney and going fishing,” Bartel told Macquarie Sports Radio.
“He’s in a pretty happy place. He’s leading the goalkicking and he’s getting paid close to a million bucks already. So why would you leave that?”
Three-time All-Australian Nick Dal Santo has no doubt Cameron is the competition’s standout figure at present.
“His ability to get from half-back and get up to the other end … he is like a gazelle. He is a delight to watch,” Dal Santo told SEN radio. “He is the best player in the competition right now.”
With Phil Davis, Lachie Whitfield and Josh Kelly all pushing hard to return this weekend, de Boer doesn’t envy coach Leon Cameron when it comes to picking a side for the Hawks clash.
“Makes it a tough match committee for Leon after such a big win,” he said.
“It’s a team you desperately want to be a part of and once you get a seat on the bus you don’t want to give it up. That competition for spots and the depth we’ve got is really important taking us forward. Isaac (Cumming) comes in at the weekend, plays a role, shows what he’s got and puts his hand right up. It’s great for culture and great for sustained success.”
