THE AFL Players’ Association has reached out to Daniel Menzel as the Geelong forward continues his slow recovery from a bizarre injury caused by an injection.

The Herald Sun understands the powerful player union phoned Menzel to see if it could provide any assistance during yet another frustrating period of rehabilitation for the luckless goalkicker. Menzel, 26, is believed to have told the AFLPA he was comfortable with his progress from the adverse reaction suffered from the needle. RE-CAP ALL TODAY’S AFL NEWS IN THE BLOG BELOW The out-of-contract livewire will miss his sixth consecutive match this week, although Menzel took a step forward this week by completing some individual training sessions. On Monday it was revealed that Menzel received two cortisone injections directly into his groin in the lead-up to the Round 6 match against Sydney, which he was ruled out of. Menzel struggled to walk after one of the injections. It was also revealed that Geelong’s medical team canvassed exploratory surgery as a treatment option, which would have almost certainly ended Menzel’s season But the Cats are confident Menzel can avoid any further setbacks and still play a part in 2018. They hope he can join his teammates at training this month and were buoyed by his progress this week, with Menzel declaring he ran “pain free”. Geelong’s head physiotherapist Mark Young confirmed Menzel still needed to build up his strength and fitness after a period of inactivity. SKIPPER: WHAT COULD BLUES GET IF MURPH LEFT? The Cats are yet to put a return date on Menzel, although coach Chris Scott said he was in a group of players hoping to prove their fitness around the Round 14 bye. Menzel is likely to have missed 10 weeks by the time the Cats return from their bye. Geelong’s scoring has fallen away without Menzel, who kicked 15 goals in the first five rounds. The Cats averaged 96 points per game with Menzel and were ranked No.1 for scoring once inside 50m in the first five rounds. Since then they have averaged just 70 points and are ranked last for scoring once inside 50m with Menzel sidelined. Watch every match of every round of the 2018 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
