ST KILDA veteran Sam Gilbert wants to play on next season, and has left the door open to finishing his career at another club if the Saints don’t offer him a new deal. Meanwhile, could the Hawks poach Marc Murphy?

ST KILDA defender Sam Gilbert is determined to play on next year and has left the door open to doing that at another club should the Saints not offer him a new deal.

Gilbert, who turns 32 in August, is out of contract at season’s end but believes he has still has a lot to offer at AFL level. The 202-game veteran returned from thumb surgery through the VFL on the weekend and is now aiming to secure his spot back in the senior side across the back half of the year before sitting down with the Saints to discuss 2019. “I’ve got aspirations to continue to play,” Gilbert said. “I think that I’m good enough to be out there with the boys. “You do need leadership, you need maturity in the backline, and I think I do bring that. I haven’t at this stage lost my pace so I’d really like to be part of it and really like to help young guys develop in whatever role that is. “I think once you’ve been in the football environment, it’s something you grow up and that’s what you want to do. I haven’t lost my passion at all so it’s something that I’d love to continue to do but it’s obviously not completely in my control.” Watch every match of every round of the 2018 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
