Giants coach Leon Cameron has expressed his reaction to finding out defender Aidan Corr was going to walk out on the club.

Corr informed the club of his intentions to exercise his free agency rights and return to Victoria for the future.

His name has already been linked to North Melbourne with the defender also leaving the Giants hub to return to Sydney.

On Monday he informed the playing group of his decision with Cameron explaining how the news was received.

“When he came to me a couple of nights ago I was disappointed and shocked, but he made that call. As hard as that may be, that‘s what’s happened and from there we kicked into gear and he’s headed back home to Sydney,” Cameron told reporters on Wednesday.

“Aidan left yesterday afternoon. That was a disappointing thing to happen (but) he exercised his right for free agency. That’s the rules. He can make that choice.

“Clearly he’s not going to play for probably three or four weeks because of his ankle and so he probably thought that (leaving the hub) was the decision he wanted to make during the week. I’m not going to lie about it, it’s really disappointing.

“We really rate Aidan, we thought he’s come a long way in the last year and a half at fullback. But he has that right and we have to respect that.”

Cameron said the entire situation was a strange time with the club working hard to try and keep the services of the 26-year-old.

“I think timing is everything … you’re in a hub and you’re actually living there, it’s not as if you’re in those normal set of circumstances that we’ve seen in the past,” he said.

“I think all of those taken into consideration, the players were disappointed. But equally Aidan Corr’s been a very, very good servant of our footy club.

“He’s a fine young man. He clearly wants to start up a family from where he’s from back home in Melbourne. He’s got his reasons.”

The Giants finish the home and away season on Friday night against St Kilda with the club needing to win and see both Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs lose if they’re any chance of making the finals.
