SUNS forward Callum Ah Chee walks in to take a shot for goal as he hears singer Amy Shark’s monster hit song Adore fill the air.
It is part of a move that has Gold Coast walking to a different beat this pre-season under new coach Stuart Dew, who has ensured all of his training sessions are completed with music playing in the background.
The former Sydney Swans assistant’s decision to have some of his favourite playlists on repeat is two-fold.
Dew wants to break up the hard slog of pre-season, aiming to keep energy levels high in the hot Queensland summer.
Secondly, the “disco fan” wants to mirror some of the conditions they will be faced with during AFL games where crowds can distract players and make communication between the team harder.
Introducing background noise means players need to work hard to make sure they are heard while also blocking out the distractions while goal kicking and making decisions.
Suns rookie recruit Nick Holman said he was comfortable with the noise, but questioned some of the song choices.
“It’s not too bad,” Holman said of the exercise.
“It helps simulate a game so you have to be loud and I’m not out of my comfort zone doing that so it’s not too bad. There are a few questionable songs getting around. Lorde, I don’t know about that one.”
Dew began putting the stereos on the boundary line at the end of November, putting on his favourite tracks before letting the players decide what would be played.
PNAU’s Chameleon, The Bee-Gee’s Stayin’ Alive as well as some techno has been among the music played at the club’s Carrara base as they practise drills.
Putting on background music is something other AFL teams have previously adopted to prepare themselves for match conditions.
GWS and Richmond have used it in the past to prepare for finals but few have used it as often as Dew is doing now.
