Essendon believes it has landed a father-son “steal” which could make rival clubs “look silly” after Alwyn Davey Jnr was a surprise national draft slider.

A bid for Alwyn Jnr – the son of 100-game Essendon small forward Alwyn Davey – was expected in the first 25 picks but eventually came from arch-rival Hawthorn at a lowly pick 45.

The Bombers went on to secure his equally-talented twin brother Jayden at pick 54, who had been expected to be a later pick after missing this season with an ACL injury.

“I was 100 per cent nervous but the excitement kicked in when Alwyn’s name first got called out and it was just a very proud moment, being by his side,” Jayden said.

“Now I’ve got the privilege to play with him. It’s very special.”

Clubs got wind on Monday that Alwyn Jnr could be set for a slide, but few expected him to go as far as he did and the Hawks decided they could no longer overlook him when their fourth pick came around.

The midfielder-forward had divided recruiters, with some knocks on his consistency and contested ball winning ability.

However, others had declared the classy speedster a clear top-20 talent in the lead-up to the draft.

“He should get bid on in the first 20 on his talent,” one club recruiting boss told News Corp last month.

“He’s genuinely talented. He could really make us all look silly if they get him at pick 40.”

Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro – who recruited Alwyn Davey Snr to Essendon in 2006 – said the club was thrilled to land the twins where they did.

“It’s huge for our football club. They are bona fide talent,” Dodoro said.

“Alwyn had a great year this year and played for Vic Metro. Many people had him in the first round of the draft so we were pretty lucky we got a bit of a steal.

“Jayden is an outstanding talent. Unfortunately he copped a knee and we’ll get him right. We’re going to take our time.”

The twins – who had boarded at Xavier College in Melbourne for the past four years – watched the draft in Darwin with family and friends.

“I know dad’s very proud that we’re going to be donning the sash,” Alwyn Jnr said.

“I’m just very excited to get to the club now.”

The Davey twins trained with Essendon earlier this year and have already made impressions on some of their new teammates.

“Twelve months ago when they were training at the club, I know Jake Stringer said they would have played senior football Round 1 this year the way they were training,” Dodoro said.

Essendon Next Generation Academy member Anthony Munkara was not selected in the national draft but will be added to the Bombers’ list as a Category B rookie on Wednesday.

“He’s a hugely talented young man from the Tiwi Islands who is part of our NGA Academy and we’re looking forward to getting him down,” Dodoro said.

North Melbourne also secured a father-son on the second night of the draft, with Cooper Harvey – the son of AFL games record holder Brent – joining the club at pick 56.

Pick 59 Port Adelaide - Kyle Marshall

South Adelaide/SA
In what turned out to be the final pick of the national draft, after the remaining clubs passed, Port Adelaide has taken raw, athletic key-defender Marshall. The 201cm teenager recorded the equal fifth-fastest 2km time trial across all state-based combines.

Pick 58 West Coast - Noah Long

Bendigo Pioneers/Vic Country
Long is a dynamic small forward/midfielder who was sidelined for most of the season, before impressing at the national championships and for the Bendigo Pioneers.

Pick 57 Fremantle - Corey Wagner

Port Melbourne VFL
It’s third time lucky for Wagner, who has been a revelation in the VFL as a running defender. The 25-year-old has been compared to Jack Sinclair for his speed and ball-use.

Pick 56 North Melbourne - Cooper Harvey

Northern Knights/Vic Metro
The son of game’s record holder and Roos legend Brent Harvey, Cooper has been unlucky with injury this year but showed promise in the final national championships clash. He becomes the club’s sixth ever father-son prospect.

Pick 55 Richmond - Steely Green

South Fremantle
Draft steel? Maybe not, but the Tigers secure the South Fremantle small who has been playing state league footy for most of the season. He can play in multiple positions and is creative with ball in hand

Pick 54 Essendon - Jayden Davey

Oakleigh Chargers
Davey has been taken by the Bombers here with their final pick of the draft. The brother of Alwyn, some rated him as a better talent than his twin before his ACL blow last year.

FOURTH ROUND: Pick 53 Port Adelaide - Tom Scully

West Adelaide/SA
Port Adelaide has taken the talented local forward who moves incredibly for a 204cm big man. In the opening seven rounds of the SANFL under-18 season, Scully booted a remarkable 37 goals – 14 more than any other player. His height and reach made him unstoppable in the air, with Scully taking 27 contested marks during the blistering start.

Pick 52 Geelong - Phoenix Foster

Norwood/SA
While still raw, Foster moves well and is terrific at ground level for a player of his size. But it’s his hands in the air that really caught the eye this year, with Foster at his best when attacking the ball in the air.

Pick 51 Hawthorn - Bailey Macdonald

Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro
Macdonald, who has competed in three athletics events at a national level, bolted into the draft frame after entering the Chargers’ team in the back-half of the year. The defender has blistering speed and takes the game on with his run.

GWS trade pick 51 to Hawthorn for their future fourth round selection

Pick 50 Adelaide - Hugh Bond

GWV Rebels/Vic Country
A tackling machine, the contested midfielder led the NAB League for tackles, averaging nearly 10 per game. Bond is a former national rower who instead chose to chase his football dream. The Crows must have had him high on their talent order after trading back in - again - to snare the Victorian.

Pick 49 Richmond - Kaleb Smith

East Fremantle/Wesley College
Smith has plenty of power, blitzing the state combine in WA after bolting into the draft frame late in the year. He is a late pick with plenty of upside.

Pick 48 Collingwood - Joe Richards

Wangaratta Magpies
The Wangaratta schoolteacher finds an AFL home. Richards has come from nowhere in the backhalf of the year to enter the draft frame from zero state league footy, instead dominating in the Ovens and Murray League for the Wangaratta Magpies. Fittingly, he was coached by former premiership player Ben Reid.

Pick 47 Carlton - Harry Lemmey

West Adelaide/SA
The South Australian key-forward was touted as a top-five prospect heading into the year after a standout bottom-age season. Lemmey is known for his elite hands, mobility, leading patterns and kicking, and projects as a player in the mould Nick Riewoldt

Pick 46 Hawthorn - Jack O’Sullivan

Jack O’Sullivan was sidelined for most of the year with a broken collarbone but tested strongly at the national combine upon his return.

Pick 45 Essendon - Alwyn Davey Jnr

Essendon matches the bid here as expected, which is, dare I say it, a steal. The Bombers were worried about a bid in the 20s before their second pick at 22 - and it came at more than double that number.

Pick 44 St Kilda - Isaac Keeler

North Adelaide/SA
Keeler has drawn comparisons to Paddy Ryder for his athleticism as a ruck/forward. The fact that the Crows didn’t nominate him AND ignored him with the previous pick adds salt into the wound for the Crows Next Generation Academy graduate.

Pick 43 Adelaide - Billy Dowling

North Adelaide/SA
Adelaide has got the tall midfielder it craves, using the pick gained in the earlier trade with Gold Coast to take big-bodied on-baller Dowling. He was a dominant force at SANFL under-18 level this season, leading the competition for disposals and ranking points and is a balanced midfielder with an impressive ability to find space forward of centre and hit the scoreboard.

Pick 42 Fremantle - Max Knobel

Gippsland Power/Vic Country
The son of former Brisbane, St Kilda and Richmond’s Trent is an exciting, developing big man who can get around the ground and take a mark up forward. Considered the second best pure ruck prospect behind West Adelaide’s Harry Barnett.

Pick 41 Fremantle - Tom Emmett

Sturt
The powerful Sturt forward, who survived cancer as a teenager, was overlooked in the past two drafts but he booted 15 goals in his final seven SANFL matches this year – three of them against a strong Adelaide Crows defence. The 20-year-old attacks the ball hard, uses his body well and can play taller than his height suggests.

Pick 40 Sydney - Caleb Mitchell

Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country
Sydney has pulled an early-third-round surprise. Mitchell is a wingman with great agility and endurance and has shown some good signs for the Murray Bushrangers this year.

THIRD ROUND: Pick 39 Western Bulldogs - Harvey Gallagher

Bendigo Pioneers/Vic Country
The first mature-ager of the draft. Gallagher averaged insane numbers in the back-half of the year as a running defender and finally gets his chance after missing out in last year’s draft and the mid-season intake.

Pick 38 Melbourne - Jed Adams

Peel Thunder/WA
They went with a key forward to start, and now the Demons, with the final pick of the second round, have nabbed a developing key defender with their second pick in Adams. The WA prospect has a nice leap and is a strong interceptor.

Pick 37 Hawthorn - Henry Hustwaite

Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country
Hustwaite is a tall midfielder-defender with nice poise in traffic who had been rated as a first round prospect at stages this year. Another nice addition for the Hawks.

Pick 36 Port Adelaide - Tom McCallum

Tasmania Devils/Allies
Port Adelaide were after a key defender, and they got one with their first pick of the draft. McCallum is an elite interceptor and burst onto the scene with an impressive national carnival.

Pick 35 St Kilda - Olli Hotton

Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro
Had been touted as a potential first round selection after bolting up the board with an excellent national championships. Hotton has power, speed and a touch of class and is a nice get at this spot.

Pick 34 GWS - Toby McMullin

A bit of a bolter here! McMullin is a promising forward who is creative with his ball-use and has nice speed.

Pick 33 Fremantle - Hugh Davies

Claremont/WA
The Dockers nab a local key defender with their first selection of the draft, who is quite athletic and is strong defensively.

Pick 32 Carlton - Jaxon Binns

Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country
Binns can run all day on the wing and will help add to Carlton’s outside midfield mix along with Blake Acres and first pick Ollie Hollands. He provides impact up forward and came third in the 2km time trial at the national combine.

Pick 31 St Kilda - James Van Es

GWV Rebels/Vic Country
The Saints have snared a key defender with their second pick, with Van Es leading the NAB League for intercepts this year. He has a fantastic leap and great closing speed.

Pick 30 Carlton - Lachie Cowan

Tasmania Devils/Allies
Carlton got its wish in adding another second round pick and nab the Morrish medallist, who provides blistering run and a penetrating kick out of defence.

Collingwood trades pick 30 to Carlton for a future second-round selection

Pick 29 West Coast - Coby Burgiel

Gippsland Power/Vic Country
The Eagles had been linked to Burgiel with their two selections in the 20s and they managed to nab the speedster who can play in a variety of positions.

Pick 28 Collingwood - Jakob Ryan

Glenelg/SA
The Pies were linked to Ryan in the first round and would be rapt to get him at this point. The 189cm defender, who models his game on star Hawk James Sicily, is an elite interceptor and you won’t miss him with the bright blonde mullet.

Pick 27 Sydney - Cooper Vickery

Gippsland Power

The Swans have done it AGAIN! First Rowston, then Michalanney, now Hawthorn NGA prospect Vickery – but this time, they snare him due to this change to NGA rules. This means that bids within 40 are protected – and Vickery joins the Swans.

Pick 26 North Melbourne - Brayden George

Murray Bushrangers/Wangaratta Rovers
George will sit out the entirety of 2023 with an ACL injury, but he could be a steal for the Roos down the track. George has tremendous power and is dangerous in the air and at ground level.

Pick 25 Essendon - Lewis Hayes

Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro
A big early win for the Bombers, with the club securing another top-30 talent before the bid for Alwyn Davey Jnr. And they’ve added one of the top key defenders in the pool in Hayes, who stands 199cm and is an elite interceptor and uses the ball well by foot.

Pick 24 Western Bulldogs – Charlie Clarke

Vic Metro/Sandringham Dragons
The Bulldogs take the sparkplug in Clarke, who openly admitted to blowing in his opponents ears on the football field to get the edge. A player Dogs fans will grow to love – but opposition fans may not feel the same way.

Pick 23 West Coast – Harry Barnett

West Adelaide/SA
The Eagles have found their Nic Naitanui replacement down the track. Barnett is great around the ground and the clear standout ruckman in the pool.

ROUND 2: Pick 22 GWS – Max Gruzewski

Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro
The Giants have held onto the first pick of the second round, despite plenty of rival interest, to take the contested marking swingman A prospect with high upside who models his game on Tom Stewart.
