‘Done nothing’: AFL coach already on hot seat after Trade Period shocker
The AFL Trade Period is over and one coach is already on the hot seat after his team got significantly worse in the off-season.

The AFL Trade Period is run and done and while some teams were active and made plenty of moves, others have emerged as the clear losers of the off-season.
The Sydney Swans are arguably the biggest winners, bringing in Taylor Adams and Brodie Grundy among other recruits, while Essendon were just as active at the trade table, bringing in Todd Goldstein, Jade Gresham, Ben McKay and Xavier Duursma.

Collingwood are the reigning premiers but their team might have got even better after Lachie Schultz joined the Magpies from Fremantle, prompting Jack Ginnivan to look elsewhere and move to Hawthorn.
The departure of Schultz and Liam Henry to St Kilda from Fremantle has continued a trend of talented players leaving the Dockers in recent years.
Coach Justin Longmuir is out of contract at the end of next season and he is already under pressure to get his side to make finals despite his team getting worse in the trade period.
Garry Lyon said on SEN: “Freo have done nothing. They’ve lost Lachie Schultz, Liam Henry and Joel Hamling left and they’ve picked up future firsts, so they’re well placed for next.”
Kane Cornes added: “I know it’s Fremantle so it’s a bit off Broadway but this is the club next year which fascinates me the most.
“With a coach under pressure, underperformed last year, after they were on the track that to a preliminary final. That was the path they were treading and they were disappointing.
Freo should re-sign Justin Longmuir tomorrow. Now presented with a worse list year on year, after taking team to the last six way ahead of time. Unfair to expect him to coach for his job in the first ten weeks of 2024, when the list build clearly no longer catered for that

“They’ve lost two important players out of their starting line-up and then the coach comes in under significant pressure but it’s not his fault. They haven’t improved their list.
“With him being out of contract, I think this is a fascinating team with what has happened.”
