Brisbane Lions forward Charlie Cameron keen to continue hot form against Dockers

Brisbane Lions livewire Charlie Cameron wants to take his game to the “next level” as he strives for greater consistency to ensure his purple patch of form turns into season-long domination.

Cameron has kicked 17 goals in his past three matches, including seven in Brisbane’s 21-point weekend win over the GWS Giants in Canberra.

His form surge has coincided with the Lions’ best run of the season, with Brisbane gunning for a fourth successive win on Saturday against Fremantle at the Gabba.

“I’m going all right at the moment, but I guess it comes down to the other players that are helping me out and putting me in better positions as well,” the humble Cameron said on Tuesday.

“I’ve got a great forward line, and anyone can just have those days and it was my day (against the Giants).”

However, the speedy Cameron wants “those days” to become regular occurrences.

“The one thing I have in my kit bag is I’m pretty quick at the moment. I’m just trying to use my speed and trying to use body work,” he said.

“I’m trying to take myself to the next level. It’s just (about) doing that consistently each week.

“I try to put myself in good spots to have some shots at goal. It’s getting those opportunities and making the most of them.”

Cameron said the competition for spots in Brisbane’s forward line was also lifting standards.

“We’ve got some quality players playing in the VFL,” he said.

“Darcy Fort’s a bit stiff at the moment (not to be in the Lions’ AFL team). He’s playing quality footy as a ruck-forward.

“We’ve got some players that are pushing for a spot in the senior team and it’s trying to make us better and keeping us on our toes.”

Fremantle has lost four from six this season, but Cameron said the Lions would prepare for the Dockers’ best on Saturday.

Last season the Lions beat Fremantle by 49 points at the Gabba but not before the Dockers had enjoyed a 14-point win over Brisbane at Optus Stadium.

“They’re still a quality side, so this weekend we’re going to come in with the mindset that they’re going to bring their best,” Cameron said.

“They’ve got a few big games coming up, and they’re going to come over here and try to beat us, so I think we’re ready for that battle.

“We try to make the Gabba a fortress here, so but obviously we lost to them last year over on their home deck, so we want to try to return the favour.”
