Melbourne star Angus Brayshaw has resolved to continue his AFL career despite losing consciousness in his latest concussion.

Brayshaw will have further brain scans over the coming months and consult his neurologist who will guide his return to football.

His brother Hamish suggested last week Brayshaw might reconsider his career after five previous concussions, including a knock that required an eight-week recovery.

But it is understood Brayshaw is keen to play on, with Melbourne’s loss to Carlton avoiding an impossible decision on whether to play in a preliminary final.

The Demons would have assessed his recovery if they had won after Brayshaw had cleared the early stages of the 12-day concussion protocol.

Instead, the finals exit means he has several months to fully recover.

Brayshaw will again meet his neurologist for continuing brain scans to ensure he minimises any risk to his long-term health.

As long as those scans continue to come up clear, he will play on under a deal which ties him to the club until the end of 2028.

The Demons believed their players were rocked by the Brayshaw concussion through their entire finals series given he was knocked out for two weeks.

Their belief is that Jacob Van Rooyen’s desire to retaliate against Collingwood to physically stand his ground led to him being suspended for his rough conduct bump on Dan McStay.

The Demons again attempted to fly the flag with a physical approach against Carlton and were instead undisciplined as Kysaiah Pickett was suspended for his hit on Patrick Cripps and fined for a jumper punch on Mitch McGovern.

Four players have this year retired after rulings from the AFL’s concussion panel – Paul Seedsman, Max Lynch, Marcus Adams and Paddy McCartin.

But if Brayshaw can prove that he has not suffered long-lasting damage and has no symptoms he is keen to take his place on the Demons list for 2024 and beyond.
