The AFLW’s powerhouse Hosking twins, Sarah and Jess, will be reunited on the footy field after Jess made a last-minute request to leave Carlton and join her sister at Richmond, sending club list managers into an unexpected frenzy on the final day of the AFLW trade period.

Sarah had joined Richmond after 30 games for the Blues over four seasons, in last year’s trade window and on the penultimate day of the AFLW trade period, Jess made what insiders called a “very late” play to exit Carlton too and rejoin her sister.

It’s understood the Blues did all they could to keep the defensive-mid but, in the end, Jess’s connection with her sister and other Tigers players, including captain Katie Brennan, won out.

Carlton traded Jess Hosking as well as their draft picks 55 and 57, in return for picks 23 and 40. Hosking, 25, joins high-profile forward Tayla Harris in exiting the club during the trade period. Harris was traded to Melbourne on Tuesday.

Carlton now holds two first-round picks in the upcoming AFLW draft, which the club has described as “arguably its strongest draft hand since the AFLW competition began”.

Blues’ head of women’s footy, Brett Munro, said the club had expected Jess to re-sign, but she had come late to them on Tuesday seeking a trade.

“That was obviously really disappointing as we have strong belief in Jess as a player and her qualities as a person, however we know for our playing group to achieve what it is capable of in the coming seasons, that requires total buy in,” he said.

“Once she had made her decision our focus was on getting the best outcome for our football club. The result is that we now have the opportunity to select three of the best 13 Victorian talent in this year’s draft which is a terrific opportunity.”

The Jess Hosking trade was one of a late flurry of trade deals on Wednesday, that included West Coast securing key defender Evie Gooch (Fremantle) and forward Aimee Schmidt (GWS), while young North Melbourne defender Jasmine Grierson was traded to the Giants.

In the dying minutes of the trade, the Kangaroos also picked up No. 19 in the draft from Gold Coast in exchange for Vivien Saad and pick 30.

Meanwhile, Melbourne announced captain Daisy Pearce had shunned any thoughts of retirement and signed back on to play for the club in the 2021-22 season.

HOW HARRIS’ DEES DEAL WENT DOWN

Tayla Harris is officially a Demon, after a mega AFLW trade involving three states, seven players and five clubs was revealed on Tuesday morning.

The high-profile star parted ways with Carlton after the Blues turned down her demands for $150,000 a year.

“I am really excited to be part of such a great club with a talented group of girls, all pushing to be their best,” Harris said.

“I can already tell this will be a great environment for me to be the best version of myself.

“I want to be a positive voice around the club and for my teammates.

“I know it’s up to me to perform my role and play my part in this team and I’m ready for that challenge.”

Melbourne captain Daisy Pearce is understood to have been instrumental in the Demons signing the key forward.

Veteran Pearce, 33, is yet to play in a finals series after suffering an injury late in the 2021 season and is running out of time to achieve the game’s ultimate success.

Harris and her management are believed to have agreed to reduced terms to join Melbourne which would see her become a Tier 3 player – below the top-paid players in the competition.

Harris’ manager, Alex Saundry, was contacted for comment on Monday night.

Harris started her career with Brisbane in 2017 and crossed to Carlton at the start of the 2018 season.

The Herald Sun revealed last month Harris wanted around $150,000 to remain with Carlton, with both parties ultimately deciding to part ways after being unable to come to terms.

But Saundry said last week that her client was not driven by money.

“It is about finding the right environment to help get her back to her best,” Saundry said.

Carlton’s head of women’s football Brett Munro confirmed the Blues had traded Harris as well as their No. 44 draft pick to Melbourne.

In exchange for their high-profile forward, Carlton have elevated themselves in the upcoming national draft, receiving the Demons’ pick No. 32.

“Our discussion with Tayla since the end of the season have always been in good faith and when it became clear we both needed to explore other options, this was always done with the intention of finding a suitable resolution for all parties and we feel that has been the case here,” Munro said.

“We thank her for her contribution to our club over the last four seasons and wish her the best for the future.”

As the Blues farewell the 37-game Harris, they have welcomed Greater Western Sydney’s leadership group member and former All-Australian midfielder Jessica Dal Pos, while the Giants acquired former Blues’ captain Katie Loynes as well as Chloe Dalton, who has made the decision to remain home in Sydney, where she had returned last year to pursue her rugby sevens Olympic dream.

Carlton has received picks 10 and 27 from the Giants, which means the Blues now hold five draft picks inside the Top 20 for players nominating for selection by the Victorian clubs.

Meanwhile, Adelaide’s 2019 premiership-winning forward, Chloe Scheer, is headed to Geelong in exchange for draft picks. The Crows have traded Scheer and their No. 49 draft pick, for Geelong’s pick 20 and 47.

Crows head of women’s footy Phil Harper said the club was disappointed to lose their 21-year-old former rising star nominee, but for Adelaide to match the offer presented to Scheer by the Cats, would have meant having to release one their top tier players and the club wasn’t prepared to do that.

“Chloe is an extremely talented player and we didn’t want to lose her,” Harper said.

“However, she was presented with a compelling offer by the Cats and we had to consider the broader implications of matching such a deal.

“It would have forced us to move on one of the players who finished high up in our Club Champion voting and we were not prepared to do that.”

Scheer’s addition to the Cats’ side will help compensate for the loss of their explosive midfielder Olivia Purcell, who is headed to Melbourne in a trade that sees Geelong receive Demon’s winger Chantel Emonson and draft pick 15.

Geelong’s head of women’s football, Brett Johnson, said the club was pleased with its new acquisitions.

“They are both talented footballers with great experience at AFLW level and we look forward to seeing them at GMHBA Stadium,” he said.

The AFLW Trade Period concludes at 2pm (AEST) on Wednesday.
