AFL trade news: Collingwood circles Justin Reid as James Peatling deal stalls

One of the Victorian powerhouse clubs is circling Crows list boss Justin Reid to join as their football boss, as Reid looks to land James Peatling before the trade deadline ends next week.

'That was a jab at Collingwood'

Adelaide list manager Justin Reid is under consideration to be Collingwood’s football boss.

The Magpies have approached Reid, who has been in his role since the end of 2014, to replace Graham Wright.

Wright joined Carlton on Wednesday as deputy chief executive after taking a sabbatical this year.

Reid has been looking at other opportunities and has ties to Collingwood CEO Craig Kelly.

He worked under Kelly at player management company Elite Sports Properties before joining the Crows.

Melbourne-based Reid has been busy helping to orchestrate Adelaide’s moves this exchange period for GWS half-back Isaac Cumming and Melbourne premiership player Alex Neal-Bullen, while luring Giants midfielder James Peatling.

High-profile deals Reid has overseen during his decade-long tenure include recruiting Jordan Dawson (from Sydney), Izak Rankine (Gold Coast) and Bryce Gibbs (Carlton).

His recruiting record was in the spotlight this year as the Crows fell well short of expectations, finishing 15th on the ladder.

Collingwood had targeted Port Adelaide football boss Chris Davies as well as premiership-winning Brisbane counterpart Danny Daly to replace Wright.

Magpies assistant Brendon Bolton filled the role this past season.

If he won the job, Reid would be following in the footsteps of his father, John, in overseeing a football department.

John was the Crows’ footy operations boss from 1995-2009, including for their back-to-back flags.

Collingwood is expected to appoint its new head of football after the trade period, which ends next Wednesday night.

Reid and Adelaide are considered unlikely to secure a deal for Peatling until next week, as the Crows and Giants jostle over which picks to include.

The trade is tipped to involve mostly future selections and Adelaide’s second-rounder in 2025 is expected to be central to negotiations.

Talks come amid a backdrop of GWS missing out on re-signing Peatling and losing Cumming to the Crows.

Peatling, a mid-season draft selection in 2021 who had played 45 games for the Giants, requested a trade last week.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a breakout campaign this past season, featuring in 19 matches and kicking two goals in the semi-final loss to Brisbane.
