A solid fightback from the Dockers has seen Collingwood record their second draw of the 2024 season.

Nick Daicos won the duel with Caleb Serong, but it was Joe Richards who shone for the Pies with 22 disposals, seven marks, seven score involvements and a goal.

The rookie showed just why he was the most traded in SuperCoach player this week, while Luke Ryan continued to accumulate points.

Hayden Young’s final quarter heroics lifted him to 105 points after sitting outside the top ten scorers at three quarter time.

Relive the updates and SuperCoach analysis all night here.

THE THREE TAKEAWAYS:

WHO WILL BE THE #1 DEFENDER?

For now, it’s still Luke Ryan. But Nick Daicos is hot on his heels - trailing him by only two points after scaling.

The pair are having incredible seasons - translating to SuperCoach scoring galore.

Daicos is doing the majority of his work in the middle, while Ryan is a kick-in King - proving how many ways there are to score points.

No matter how they’re doing it, they’re doing it well - and it’s never been as evident as now that you need both of these players in your side.

Luke Ryan is more of an unknown to your regular AFL fan - leaving him at only 30% ownership as opposed to Daicos’ 77%.

It’s a huge gap for two players who are becoming set and forget captain options, especially when the former (just) has the higher average.

If you don’t have him, put him on top of your post-lockout target list. Right now.

NO FREIJAH? NO WORRIES!

Or maybe just a few less worries.

It’s Richards who seems to have been the steal of the week despite Joel Freijah’s strong showing last night.

The slightly more expensive option at $123,900, Richards was worth every cent.

A -95 breakeven and a score of 100 - it’s a bit late to be doing maths, but it screams cash generation, and lots of it.

Lachie Sullivan had already risen by $64,800, but with a breakeven of -29 and a score of 88, he’s also shaping to be a solid rookie selection. His score could have been even higher, too, if it wasn’t for that fateful free kick that led to Darcy’s score.

The question begs, who stays when the cattle returns?

WHAT TO DO WITH JACKSON?

A score of 67 is not the worst in the context of the current forward market, but it’s far from ideal - especially when Darcy was able to reach 113 after scaling.

Jackson has 11 hit-outs to Darcy’s 31 and failed to make the most of Cox’s exit from the game.

He attended nine centre bounces, so not all hope is lost - but it’s a far cry from last week’s 154 point game.

So, where to now?

I’ll be waiting out his match-up with his former side next week, and could potentially move him on during his bye in Round 13.

I don’t like to be too reactive based on one score, but it’s not the first time we’ve seen this unfold ...

FT SuperCoach Analysis: IT’S A DRAW!

Where’s Patch? It’s a draw!

A missed attempt from Sharp levelled the game with under a minute to play.

Walyalup stormed home to kick five of the last six goals.

Despite their dominance late, Serong and Young were unable to break the ton prior to last minute scaling.

Nick Daicos lifted to 132, while Richards sits square on 100.

Fellow rookie Sullivan (89) was immense in the final quarter.

Jackson failed to fire on 68 points, with Darcy’s return leaving him to stay forward for the majority of the game.

Ryan’s (137) involvement late worked in his favour, while Clark (134) backed up a solid showing last week.

10.48PM: YOUNG ARRIVES

His first attempt failed, but he tried again ... and succeeded.

Young, now on 86 points, kicks his first to get the Dockers within two kicks. There’s three minutes to go, and they’re dominating the clearance. Pendlebury has gone behind the ball.

A mark to Darcy Cameron seems to just about quell the Dockers’ late resurgence.

Unless ... Chapman takes an intercept mark? And Pearce lines up for goal?

Cometh the hour, cometh the skipper.

I stole that from Brayshaw’s commentary, but it sounded great. We’re on here!

A brilliant moment with a brilliant tribute to Cam McCarthy.

10.41PM: COMEBACK TIME?

I should’ve known not to call it after last week’s antics at Adelaide Oval ...

Three goals and 62 SuperCoach points to Banfield, and a free kick (+ 4 points) and goal to Sean Darcy.

Wow.

10.38PM: MIHOCEK DONE

Brody Mihocek has been ruled out of the game with hamstring awareness.

It shouldn’t matter now, though, as Bobby Hill kicks his first major to widen the Pies’ lead to 25 points.

10.33PM: LUKE RYAN

That’s the update. He’s sitting on 121 - I keep picturing him with that lovely blue VC heading ...

Walyalup also broke the Pies’ consecutive streak of goals through Banfield - the margin sits at 19 with nine minutes to play.

10.26PM: BREAKING THE ICE

After eleven consecutive behinds scored at the one end, Crisp’s goal had ended the streak.

It’s good news for Collingwood, who will be looking to continue their streak of six unanswered goals.

3QT SuperCoach Analysis:

Collingwood have the ascendency - will Daicos continue to soar or will Serong and Young have their say?

Fyfe (41) has had a quiet day while Jackson (60) has somewhat bounced back after sitting on 35 at the last break. Could he be the difference with Cox subbed out of the game?

Wil Parker has scored 19 points since his injection into the game - a solid showing from the debutant and potential bubble boy next week.

Clark was the first to break the ton, with Ryan on his tail.

Harrison (73) has too been strong, going under the radar as a SuperCoach selection, sitting in only 1% of teams.

10.10PM: WAGNER WARMS UP

Corey Wagner - Walyalup’s sub - is about to be activated, replacing Josh Draper

Meanwhile, Joe Richards has scored. A SuperCoach masterclass from the rookie tonight ... maybe I should’ve benched Heeney instead!

Collingwood’s young guns are keeping them alive.

Pendlebury has come to the bench, with work being done on his bicep.

10.08PM: THE TON’S BEEN BROKEN

And maybe for a second time, as I watch Ryan play on from yet another kickout. My potential VC should now have clocked 100 points, while my actual VC Serong sits on 55.

It was Jordan Clark, though, who first surpassed 100 - sitting on 106 points.

He’s once again been prolific in a Dockers backline that has largely stood up under siege.

10.00PM: PARKER ON

Debutant Wil Parker has taken to the field to replace Mason Cox.

Will this size difference allow Jackson to work his way into the game? Only time will tell.

Walyalup continue to prioritise hand-balling, feeding into the Pies’ pressure.

Young is one player whose handball ratio is impacting his score, with only four kicks from 16 disposals.

9.56PM: COX GOES DOWN

It was an awkward landing that has sent Mason Cox off the field, with his knee getting trapped under his body as he fell.

The position of his leg was indicative of medial ligament damage - he is on his way to the rooms.

It is the second time he’s come to the bench today, after a small gash to the eye earlier in the piece following a collision with Sean Darcy.

9.45PM: INSTANT REPLY

Three quick goals to Collingwood and the contest is tight once more - a two point game.

Nick Daicos has been involved early, as has Serong - this midfield battle will go down to the wire.

The Pies have lifted their pressure, with Harrison leading the tackle count (6) while also kicking three goals - including the latest.

At $201,800, he sits on 64 points.

HT SuperCoach Analysis:

Walyalup found three late goals to break open the quarter, led by Luke Ryan’s (69) set up off half back.

Counterpart Jordan Clark is also scoring well, while Serong sits on a lesser 42 despite leading from the front.

The Pies’ pressure has remained strong, headlined by rookies Harrison and Richards alongside the red-hot Daicos.

Luke Jackson’s score of 35 is meagre in comparison to last week’s 154 heroics - will he be able to bounce back, or will the return of Darcy see him headlining the trade table at the Round’s end?

Charlie Dean (5) and Ed Allan (4) have failed to fire, while fellow rookie Sullivan is chipping away on 26 points.

9.10PM: TIME DELAY, 50M

50M penalties - like last night - are often a SuperCoaches worst enemy ... but not tonight.

Just to add to the delightful news I have delivered below, the 50m pentalty was awarded to Ryan, who then recorded an inside 50 and score involvement.

Jordan Clark is sitting on 60 following a score of 151 last week.

Just to reiterate, I’m really regretting that VC pick. Is this how it feels to be a Ryan non-owner? He still sits in only 30% of teams.

At least some of us know what we’re doing ...

9.03PM: RYAN RECOVERS

Was I going to switch my VC from Serong to Ryan pre game? Yes.

Did I forget? Yes.

I hope you didn’t - he sits on 42, leading the scoring for the Dockers as they struggle to move the ball forward. The lack of flow has seen multiple backwards kicks to, you guessed it, Ryan.

9.01PM: INEFFICIENCY REIGNS

Walyalup saw a few misses early, but have evened the ledger which now sits at 3.3.

The Pies, however, are sitting on 3.7.

Both sides are having to work hard for each entry inside fifty, and so far, aren’t reaping the reward when they do find a target.

It’s a contest-to-contest affair which has seen both defence’s push high up the ground to limit ball movement. Efficiency in front of goals could be the decider.

QT SuperCoach Analysis:

Popular SuperCoach picks have fired so far, making for a level contest.

Richards and Daicos have starred in the middle, more so than Serong (26) and Young (22).

Jackson and Darcy (25) are equal in SuperCoach terms, while it’s Pies rookie Harvey Harrison (48) who leads at the first break.

Pendlebury (31) has been impressive once again, while Ryan (31) could almost be on 50 points if not for uncharacteristic turnovers and free kicks against.

8.37PM: DEADLY DAICOS

And it isn’t Nick this time. Josh Daicos fires from long range to keep the Pies in touch.

Rookie Joe Richards (29) is the equal-highest scorer for the Pies, while Nat Fyfe sits on 10.

Ryan just gave away a free kick ... it would be nice if he stopped that. There has already been 11 free kicks awarded so far.

8.31PM: HOLDING THE BALL

Recent weeks have seen conjecture surrounding the interpretation of the holding the ball rule - more so the lack of calls compared to the number of tackles per game.

So far, I’ve counted at least four - possibly five of these calls paid. It feels as if it will be a focus of the night, could this mean more free kicks for and against?

Four points are added - or subtracted - for this metric. Nick Daicos was the latest recipient, too.

In other news, Luke Ryan just raced back to take the kick in - that one’s for you, Tim.

8.25PM: HOT POTATO

I wish they would show the pressure gauge - this game is heating up. Each side is swarming at every contest - who will break through?

The answer just unfolded in real time - Andy Brayshaw.

Walyalup have taken five intercept marks while Collingwood is

yet to record one - their back half will need to get busy.

I’m feeling myself with the Pendlebury call - he sits on 20 points, while Nick Daicos and Caleb Serong have 12.

8.15PM: DOCKERS DRAW FIRST BLOOD

After struggling to convert last week - an issue plaguing them in a broader sense across 2024 so far - Walyalup have started with a goal from their first scoring shot.

Josh Treacy has now kicked a goal in every game this year for a SuperCoach average of 78.4.

Captain Alex Pearce has been strong down the line.

The pair lead the scoring on 27 and 20 points respectively, while Josh Daicos (7) is leading for the Pies. It comes after recording 83% time in forward half up to this point.

8:10PM: THE BOUNCE
Following a moving Welcome to Country ceremony, this awaited clash in underway.

Former Docker Lachie Schultz is celebrating his 100th game - 90 of which he played with tonight’s home side.

7.37PM: SUPERCOACH WATCH

There’s plenty to watch on the SuperCoach front tonight, with Craig McRae the latest coach to kindly provide us with rookies galore.

While Parker’s sub role rules him out of contention, it’s great news for owners of Lachie Sullivan and Joe Richards - especially with fellow rookie Joel Freijah scoring 76 last night.

Nick Daicos is in blistering form with a three round-average of 134.0 - and he’s not the only one flying high.

Luke Ryan (143.3) and Caleb Serong (135) are also starring in this metric, while Scott Pendlebury (123.7) is currently my favourite POD player ... despite being a non-owner.

Despite dominating with 154 points last week, Luke Jackson also becomes a watch once more with the return of Sean Darcy.

Stay tuned for live updates as the Sir Doug Nicholls Round celebrations continue.

(Let’s hope the answer to that question ^ is SuperCoaches!)

7.15PM: SUBS NAMED, NO LATE CHANGES FOR BLOCKBUSTER

No late changes out west, with Wil Parker making his Collingwood debut as the sub, meaning fellow debutant Ed Allan will start the game.

Parker, a former cricketer, played four First Class matches, one domestic One Day match and nine BBL games from 2020 to 2024.

After signing with the Magpies, Parker made his VFL debut against Coburg in Round Four, kicking a goal and 21 disposals.

For the Dockers Corey Wagner will be the sub.
