AFL Draft 2021: Indicative draft order after Round 13

Some big trades including future draft picks will have a major impact on this year’s order. What picks would your club have if the draft was held now?

Reigning premier Richmond holds the strongest AFL draft hand of any club at the midway point of the season in a sign that a second wave of success could be just around the corner.

An analysis of the indicative draft order after Round 13 shows the eighth-placed Tigers currently hold an incredible four picks inside the top 30 at this year’s draft, and six selections inside the top 50.

Richmond’s draft hand as it stands is picks 11, 16, 24, 29, 40, 47 and 83 as a result of some clever future trading.

The Tigers handed over pick 20 in last year’s draft to Geelong during live trading, allowing the Cats to select midfielder Max Holmes.

Geelong in turn on-traded its first-round pick in this year’s draft (currently pick 16) to the Tigers, giving Richmond two first-round selections in the 2021 draft.

The Tigers also hold St Kilda’s second-round selection (currently pick 24) as part of the Jack Higgins trade last year, as well as holding their own second-round selection.

The Tigers also hold two third-round selections, one of them coming from Gold Coast (currently pick 40), which was a straight swap for Oleg Markov during last year’s trade period.

Richmond isn’t the only club with a bumper crop of draft picks this year, with Greater Western Sydney currently holding picks 3 and 9, while Hawthorn currently has three selections in the first 21.

Hawthorn has indicated it will use its first-round pick (currently pick 2) rather than trading it, with chief executive Justin Reeves saying last month he “can’t see it going any other way in all honesty”.

At the other end of the spectrum, Melbourne’s first pick is currently No. 33 and Collingwood’s first selection is No. 35.

However, the Magpies have the ability to match an early bid on father-son prospect Nick Daicos, who recruiters see as the likely No. 1 draft pick this year.

The second-placed Western Bulldogs currently have pick 17 as their first selection, but also have the ability to match an early bid on highly-rated father-son prospect Sam Darcy.

The son of former champion ruckman and current club director Luke Darcy, some recruiters believe that the 197cm Oakleigh Chargers forward-ruckman will strongly command a bid in the top five selections at this year’s draft.

Recruiters believe the top-end of this year’s draft is strong but that the talent pool thins out after the top 25-30 picks.
