Star playmaker Daniel Rioli will miss Gold Coast Suns’ crucial push to a maiden finals berth after he was sidelined with an injured fibula.
Rioli, who joined the Suns this season after three premierships with Richmond, sustained a small fracture in his leg during the horror loss to Adelaide on Sunday afternoon.
He is expected to miss four to six weeks, meaning he could be forced to play the Suns’ inaugural final after a significant lay-off.
The Suns rushed Rioli into surgery to improve his chances of return ahead of September action.
It’s additional unwanted injuries to the Suns’ stock of experience after Touk Miller was sidelined last week.
“Scans on Monday shows that Daniel has sustained a small fracture to his fibula,” Gold Coast head physio Lindsay Bull said.
“After discussing the results with Daniel, a decision was made that he will undergo an operation which will make him unavailable for selection for several weeks.”
