ADELAIDE teenager Alastair McMillan is gearing up for his third crack at the Bupa Challenge Tour in January but that’s just a training ride for his attempt to pedal across England next year.
The 14-year-old Pulteney Grammar student is set to ride the Coast to Coast in the UK with father Darren in July while raising money for Legacy with 2015 marking the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli.
The three-day Coast to Coast takes riders 210km from Workington to Newcastle upon Tyne in the north of England.
To prepare for the adventure, Alastair is planning to ride the 151.7km from Glenelg to Mount Barker as part of the Bupa Challenge Tour during January’s Santos Tour Down Under.
It will be the third time he has participated in the event after riding 30km in 2013 and 75km earlier this year.
“You get to ride the course the professionals do and it’s a really fun day,” he said.
“Cycling is great fun and fitness and you can be competitive if you want.”
Alastair races his bike with the Kilkenny Cycling Club and is a regular on Amy’s Ride and other Bike SA events during the year.
