GRACE Grace, the tautonymously, but not aptly, named Queensland Education Minister, let the cat out of the bag last week.
Amid a furore over the teaching of “gender fluidity” in Queensland schools, Grace declared in an interview on Channel Nine: “No its not political correctness gone mad. This is reality. We have just had the biggest debate about marriage equality.”
In other words, gender fluidity classes are an inevitable consequence of same-sex marriage; the new “reality”, according to Grace.
Which is exactly what “No” campaigners said during the marriage debate and for which they were howled down as “homophobes”.
Dr Pansy Lai, who appeared with other brave mothers in a “No” TV ad, was abused by activists for warning that Safe Schools-style indoctrination would become mandatory if gender was removed from marriage. GetUp tried to get her deregistered.
“Even though we’re bitterly disappointed that a high-ranking government official would say this, it is what same-sex marriage campaigners were denying all along,” she said yesterday.
The latest controversy erupted after parents at Mitchelton State High School in Brisbane complained about a cartoon character named “Genderbread Person” used in health studies classes to teach children gender is not binary and how to identify as “gender queer”.
It also teaches the unscientific fallacy that gender identity, gender expression, biological sex, and “sexual attractions” are unrelated to each other. And it claims most people are at least partly bisexual.
Queensland Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington is a rare politician willing to push back: “I think this program is disgusting and shouldn’t be taught in our schools,” she said.
“If kids aren’t confused about their sexuality before being taught this program, they will be afterwards.”
Grace Grace couldn’t care less.
