Celebrities endorsing Hillary Clinton may actually be pushing votes to Trump

For all her scandals, there’s still no shortage of famous faces who support US Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, writes Caroline Marcus. And frankly, they’re not helping.

FBI: New Emails Don't Change Decision on Hillary Clinton

By tomorrow, the free world will have a new leader and either way the wind blows, it’s not looking good.

US voters have the choice between a misogynist ass with no government experience that polarises the public, and a woman who protected a misogynist ass, has a questionable record in government and is equally polarising.

It’s an unenviable decision.

Hillary Clinton may well find that the FBI’s last-minute statement yesterday — that their fresh investigation into her emails produced no evidence she should face criminal charges — will provide the boost she needs to get her over the line.

But whoever ends up in the White House, one thing is clear: America will be the most divided it’s ever been.

I’ve already written in these pages about how Trump’s grotesque attacks on women make him patently unsupportable in my view.

But to say women should support Clinton simply because she’s a woman or represents the “lesser of two evils”, as it’s been written, is also naive.

Her own scandals include using a private email server while secretary of state to send and receive classified emails instead of a secure official server, then suspiciously deleted tens of thousands of emails after being subpoenaed to pass them over to an investigation.

She hid her pneumonia diagnosis from the public.

The charity she runs with husband Bill, the Clinton Foundation, has come under fire for allegedly rewarding donors with government favours.

And it emerged yesterday that Wikileaks emails appear to show money from the foundation had been used to help fund daughter Chelsea’s $3 million 2010 wedding.

Still, there is no shortage of people who support her, among them celebrities.

In the past few days, she’s wheeled out Beyonce and her rapper/music producer husband Jay Z, Katy Perry and basketballer LeBron James to lend their star power to her campaign.

One celebrity literally singing Clinton’s praises is Lena Dunham, of HBO’s Girls fame.

Dunham’s latest creative effort is a rap video clip entitled Sensual Pantsuit Anthem and, frankly, it’s unclear whether she is trying to attract voters to Clinton or actively turn them off.

Introducing the clip, Dunham tells viewers how “shaken” she’s been by the election.

“It has unveiled the darkest aspects of American culture and the racist, homophobic, ableist and xenophobic rhetoric is making me ill,” she muses, pandering directly to the Trump supporters who detest this very type of political correctness.

The actual lyrics are even worse. A sample: “She worked harder than her man did/ still saw her grandkid/ and people have the nerve to ask her what her plan is.”

Umm yes, voters want to have a fair idea of a plan, given she could be running the country for the next four years.

A back-up singer warbles: “I can’t believe she’s in the race with this guy/ let’s get out and vote or everybody might die.”

So now supporting Trump will actually kill you.

Dunham finishes off by stripping off her pants suit to reveal another skimpy, lingerie-style pants suit (because it wouldn’t be Lena Dunham without a nude or near-nude scene), posing the question, “I wonder if I’m actually hurting her chances of winning.”

You don’t have to wonder, Lena.
