‘Celebrating’ abortion shows lack of humanity

IT’S one thing to legalise abortion, but actively celebrating what is by any account always a tragic event shows a shocking lack of judgment and empathy, writes Miranda Devine.

WHAT a despicable stunt from Queensland’s deputy premier Jackie Trad.

After the state parliament voted for extreme abortion laws last week, Trad triumphantly posted photos on Twitter showing the Victoria and Kurilpa Bridges lit up purple in celebration.

“Love seeing our local bridges beaming with purple light to celebrate the passing of our bill to decriminalise abortion,” Trad wrote.

“We’re keeping them lit up right across the weekend so make sure you go check them out.”

What a thing to celebrate — killing unborn babies.

The least the Queensland Labor government ought to do after ramming through the legislation is have the grace to respect the views of the 73 per cent of Queenslanders who are opposed to late-term abortion after 23 weeks, according to a YouGov Galaxy poll.

As it turned out only the Kurilpa Bridge was lit up to celebrate abortion. The Victoria Bridge was purple to raise awareness of a rare genetic disorder known as Rett syndrome.

“So, I may have gotten a bit excited and thought that all the Brisbane Bridges were lit up purple to support our bill to decriminalise abortion,” Trad tweeted later.

She didn’t explain the significance of the colour purple, but perhaps it was chosen because it is the official colour of International Women’s Day. Which is ironic, considering sex-selection abortions are among the biggest killers of girls in the world.

Red would have been more appropriate colour for Trad’s death bridge.
