Want to buy your first home? Here’s where to do it in SA

For first-home buyers, there are five SA suburbs you should look at first – and the top one is a beautiful, quiet Adelaide Hills town.

Tiser Explains: How to get the best price for your house

Wanting to enter the market but aren’t sure where you should be looking?

New PropTrack data has identified the best suburbs to buy into if you’re a first-home buyer, and, in a revelation that has come as no surprise to local real estate agent Andrew Adcock of Adcock Real Estate, Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills has taken out the top spot.

The suburb currently has a median of $376,000 – making it significantly more affordable than metropolitan Adelaide’s median house price of $630,000, and even less than the metro unit price of $395,000.

“Woodside and Balhannah are starting to get more unaffordable for first homebuyers and this is an affordable alternative with large allotments,” Mr Adcock said.

“Lobethal to the city is 45 minutes, as is the Barossa, the river is 38 minutes away, Magill is 33 minutes away and Tea Tree Gully is 25 minutes away, so it’s central.

“We’re seeing a good amount of interest from suburban residents looking to move to the Hills too.”

Indy Sinnott and Jae Edwards bought their first home together last June in Lobethal and Ms Sinnott said it took them about six months to find their property.

“It was a very good price range for what we were looking for – which was three bedrooms and a big backyard for the dogs,” she said.

“It was very competitive, we’d go and look for houses and put in offers and then get told we were $50,000 under the mark and we’d already offered above asking, it was just crazy.

“There were a lot of first homebuyers and families in the mix.”

The data considered the number of active househunters per property for sale in a suburb, relative to a typical suburb in Adelaide.

O’Sullivan Beach, Elizabeth Grove, Elizabeth South and Para Hills West rounded out the top five suburbs for first-home buyers.
