A picturesque mansion hidden away in a mountain valley in one of the state’s most remote towns has hit the market with a price tag of $1.4m.

The Windsor House — built in 1890 with 90,000 bricks — is a highlight of tourist hotspot and former gold town Walhalla, 180km east of Melbourne.

The main building, on Right Hand Branch Rd features five bedrooms, two bathrooms and four carparking spaces, with the Quarters, a separate residence near the main home, has three bedrooms, a kitchen, a stone feature wall and a bridge allowing people to drive up close to the home.

Cape Woolamai’s One Agency Country to Coast Real Estate agent Kim Durrand said the The Windsor House was an enchanting property that takes you on a journey back in time.

“The current owners have spent many hours restoring it, whilst maintaining its charm,” Ms Durrand said.

“This property is available for private sale and could either be a private home for those wishing to escape city life or as a thriving Airbnb business allowing tourists to stop and spend some time in a previous gold mining town.”

Also featured in the property is a wine cellar built into side of the mountain, a combined lounge and dining room with an open fireplace and window views over the gardens and surrounds.

The property additionally includes a workshop with two rooms and a variety of convenient space.

Walhalla was founded as a gold mining community in late 1862, was home to 4000 residents and is now frozen in time to approximately 20 to 30 residents, according to Visit Melbourne.
