Champion cricketer Wasim Akram’s Brighton townhouse has gone through to the keeper after passing in at its Saturday auction.

The 31 Whyte St pad, owned by the Pakistani cricket captain-turned-commentator for the past nine years, had a $1.73m-$1.9m price tag ahead of the 2pm auction.

It comes after PropTrack predicted more than 1200 properties would go under the hammer this week in what would be the strongest end to spring since the post-lockdown auction boom in 2021.

Two buyers showed up to bid on the Sultan of Swing’s home on Saturday afternoon, however it passed in on an opening offer of $1.925m.

Akram, considered one of the world’s top fast bowlers of all time, was the only Pakistani player named in Wisden’s all-time Test World XI.

He has split his time living in the Bayside suburb for the past decade with time in his hometown of Karachi.

Marshall White Brighton director Jason Swift said further negotiations were currently taking place for the Brighton pad.

8 BOOKER ST, CHELTENHAM

A three-bedroom Cheltenham house with a solar-heated lap swimming pool sold $140,000 over reserve on Saturday.

Two buyers vied for the pad at the auction, which opened with a $1.45m offer, immediately surpassing the $1.4m reserve.

“It knocked a lot of people out from the start leaving two very competitive buyers,” Ray White Cheltenham chief auctioneer Kevin Chokshi said.

The property eventually sold for $1.54m to a young couple with two children.

“They missed out on a different property in Cheltenham this morning so they decided to bid and bid strongly,” Mr Chokshi said.

“The home is very cute, the gardens are beautiful and at this time of the year swimming pools always add a lot of appeal. It’s also on the beach side of the highway so it’s a very popular part of Cheltenham.”

The vendors were an English family now looking to move to the Mornington Peninsula.

8 Booker St was first listed for $1.3m-$1.4m.

342 OHEA ST, PASCOE VALE SOUTH

In Pascoe Vale South, a three-bedroom 1980s brick house in need of a renovation soared $170,000 above reserve after four buyers competed for the keys.

The auction for 342 Ohea St kicked off with a $1m offer before bids climbed up to reach the reserve of $1.2m.

A handful of buyers who turned up to bid didn’t get the chance to put their hand up before the property sold for $1.37m, gifting the vendors a $170,000 premium.

A local family placed the successful offer while another family and two investors missed out.

Barry Plant Inner City Group Jarrod Couch handled the sale.

47 MARKS ST, COBURG

Another hot auction was seen in Coburg, where five buyers went up against each other for a renovated Californian-style home.

Bidding for the five-bedroom house kicked off at $1.7m and quickly climbed up to $1.8m before offers rose in $50,000 and $20,000 increments.

The auction slowed down at about $1.94m but picked up again to reach the eventual sale price of $2.03m.

Ray White Coburg auctioneer Yash Akpinar called the auction and said a young family living locally and looking to upsize won the keys.

“They were very emotional and had been looking for a long time,” Mr Akpinar said.

“All the other buyers were families looking to upsize. The house has a good layout with five bedrooms, multiple living areas and it backs onto the local park.”

He added that family homes rarely hit the market and were often snapped up quickly.

“The sellers are over the moon but also feeling emotional,” the auctioneer said.

“They had it as a rental for a short period of time but lived there before so there are a lot of memories.”

The property had a price guide of $1.8m-$1.9m ahead of the auction.

20 BALLINA TCE, VERMONT SOUTH

A five-bedroom house in Melbourne’s east attracted five bidders to its Saturday morning auction.

A large crowd gathered to watch the showdown in Vermont South, where eight buyers registered to bid but not all had the chance due to the fierce competition.

The property flew $81,000 above the $1.825m reserve to sell for $1.906m under the hammer to a multi-generational family.

Harcourts Judd White auctioneer Andrew Dimashki handled the sale and said the owner, now moving for a tree change, was “ecstatic” with the result.

The 790sq m pad was first listed with a $1.6m-$1.7m asking price.

20A NEPTUNE ST, RICHMOND

Over in Richmond, a young first-home buyer couple renting locally won the auction for a three-bedroom house.

The 20A Neptune St home stretches across three levels and boasts a stylish, contemporary interior.

Five bidders, all owner occupiers, competed at the Saturday morning auction which kicked off with a $1.65m offer from a buyer’s agent.

After the property was called on the market at the reserve price of $1.75m, the competition heated up and bids soared $87,000 above reserve.

AUCTION REPLAYS AND RESULTS

It sold for $1.837m with a crowd of about 80 people looking on.

Nelson Alexander Fitzroy Charlie Barham said the home was “well built” and architecturally-designed which had appealed to a wide range of buyers.

“With the cost of building buyers are prepared to pay a premium for these styles of homes,” Mr Barham said.

39B LUNTAR RD, OAKLEIGH SOUTH

Saturday auctions kicked off with a strong result in Oakleigh South, where a three-bedroom unit flew $81,000 over reserve.

Four buyers competed for the 39B Luntar Rd pad, which was initially listed with a $730,000-$790,000 price guide ahead of the 10am auction.

Offers quickly surpassed the $790,000 reserve before the property sold for $871,000 to a buyer who had been looking for a home for more than six months.

Ray White Clayton agents Peter Liu and Lisa Li handled the sale.

Auction results during the week have also performed well, including the Cheltenham home of the late world-renowned sculptor Vincas Jomantas and his artist wife Laima.

The couple’s family is selling 1 Mena Ave, described by Ray White Cheltenham’s Trevor Bowen as a 1970s “time capsule” where the modernist-style lamps, furniture and ceiling lights echo Vincas’ modernist sculptures.

It was initially listed with a $1.18m-$1.295m price guide before selling under the hammer to a young couple for an undisclosed sum understood to be within the asking range.

A crowd of 37 people gathered to watch the Thursday auction, including a former RMIT staff member who worked with Vincas.
