Homeowners are earning up to $100,000 a year by leaving their house for a few hours at a time.

Pandemic fuelled growth in the local film industry means international and domestic production companies are increasingly on the hunt for homes to shoot scenes and in some cases are prepared to pay up to $10,000 a day to do so.

Film and TV shows are on the hunt for anything from suburban houses to palatial mansion.

Industry experts said grand Victorian homes were highly sought after at the moment, especially those renovated and which have unique spaces.

The long pipeline of TV, film and advertising projects shot in NSW means film crews are renting houses on a consistent basis, often returning to the same property for multiple projects throughout the year.

Love Island Australia has also confirmed plans to film its upcoming season at a luxurious property in the Byron Bay Hinterland.

Homeowners can list their properties via industry websites such as A Perfect Space. Its founder Kate Tiller said owners of average Australian houses were able to get a slice of action with production companies after a variety of homes and in some cases just a room.

“Homes with a relaxed, coastal vibe have also been sought after for spring/summer shoots like Hamptons style (homes), as well as anything spacious that allows production companies multiple shoot options throughout the house” she said.

“The kitchen, living and outdoor are the key areas that are most sought after zones, however crews require the use of the bathroom/bedroom for hair and makeup/green room.”

Selling agent Chris Malone of Ray White Rural NSW said revenue streams from film productions can be an additional selling point.

“It helps to speak to the quality of the property that the property has been used for film and television.”

“Many potential buyers are also interested to know that there were commercial opportunities on offer too.”

“The income is very useful and most of it goes towards the cost of the home, general maintenance and improvements,” she said.
