A metropolis glowing with solar panels and draped with greenery is the vision of Bradfield Scholarship finalist Anita Pickard.
The University of Sydney biomedical engineering student can picture a self-sustaining, efficient Sydney that has the ability to adapt to natural and man-made changes while relying less on motor vehicles.
“Electric vehicles and shared mobility services such as GoGet can reduce the number of privately owned cars and therefore traffic and congestion,” she said.
“This will diminish the need for facilities such as carparks and open up other exciting opportunities.”
The 19-year-old student believes the city should consider transforming its current concrete facade to an amalgamation of vertical green gardens coupled with solar towers to maximise solar energy absorption.
“We could transform our city into a self-sustainable city that exists in accordance with public amenities and greenery combined with homes and office buildings,” she said.
With a radical plan to develop mixed-use buildings, safer public areas and affordable housing, Ms Pickard hopes this will help create a connected Sydney.
“We’ll be able to improve the health and wellbeing of citizens and create an integrated community that provides a quality lifestyle for everyone,” she said.
The winner of the Lendlease Bradfield Urbanisation Scholarship will be announced on November 15.
