A woman fatally struck and dragged by a cement truck while crossing the road was due to celebrate her 61st wedding anniversary.

The woman who died after being struck by a cement truck and dragged underneath has been identified as Gangotri Maharaj, who had just become an Australian citizen.

Ms Maharaj, who celebrated her 83rd birthday last week, had just voted for the first time in an Australian election and was holding hands crossing the road with her husband when the truck hit her, Ten News reported.

Gangotri and husband VJ Maharaj were due to celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary This Saturday.

A witness heard a distraught Mr Maharaj crying “my wife, my wife” over her body after the accident around 11am in the northern Sydney suburb of Crows Nest.

The couple had been dropped off at the intersection by their daughter about 10.50am, before they entered a nearby Coles supermarket, Daily Mail Australia reported.

When the couple left the store to cross the road and meet their daughter when the cement truck hit them.

Mr Maharaj then collapsed to his knees screaming “my wife, my wife”, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Eyewitness Jiraphat Seesai saw the couple holding hands before the horrific collision at the intersection of Albany St and Willoughby Rd.

“They got crashed by the truck and the old lady (went) under the truck,” Mr Seesai told The Telegraph.

“The old man say ‘my wife, my wife’.”

Emergency workers were called to the site just after 11am and arrived to find the woman trapped under the truck with “catastrophic injuries”, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

The woman died at the scene.

The husband was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital with cuts and abrasions.

Witnesses claimed the driver didn’t seem to have realised he had hit anyone, Nine reported.

The woman was reportedly dragged along the road as people screamed at the driver to stop.

The male truck driver was taken in for mandatory testing of drugs and alcohol.

He was reportedly in shock over the incident.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the crash.
