AN inaugural A-League minor premiership is a strong possibility for the Western Sydney Wanderers after they defeated Adelaide United 4-2 at Hindmarsh Stadium on Sunday.

The Wanderers sit third on 36 points, four behind the first-placed Mariners.

Midfielder Youssouf Hersi was the chief destroyer against United, scoring two goals and setting up another.

Coach Tony Popovic was pleased with how the team pushed on after two quick-fire goals late in the first half.

"The team is playing with a lot of confidence and I was impressed with how they went on with it," Popovic said.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game and yes there is more expectation now but I am happy with how the players are dealing with it and the confidence they are showing."

Expectations on the team are set to rise considerably after four consecutive wins.

But Popovic said it would not be a burden on his side.

"We are a close-knit group, a club that has high aspirations we want to be the best," he said. "I don't see it as anything special; it's just the way the Wanderers work.

"And we are very happy with how we play our football, how we conduct ourselves, and moving forward there is a lot more room for improvement on and off the park.

"Now we have shown a great consistency in our results four straight wins, any team that could achieve that would be pleased."

The Wanderers will hope to continue their impressive form when they host the Newcastle Jets at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday at 7.45pm.
