Sayem Sultan could land a spot on the Sydney Thunder team in the fourth KFC Big Bash League after his bowling skills at Bangladeshi Day of MoneyGram Thunder Nation Cup round impressed selectors.
The 19-year-old Whalan off-spinner and middle order batsman said he was surprised at his selection for the rookie trials.
“I was a bit taken back by it ... the first game I didn’t do all that well,” Sultan said.
“I’m so excited to have been selected to attend the Community Rookie Trials with Sydney Thunder.
“It’s an amazing opportunity that does not come around often.”
The community sides compete in the MoneyGram Thunder Nation Cup for a chance to play before the Thunder’s home crowd at Spotless Stadium.
While the Assassins side won the day, Sultan, who played for the Western All-Stars, stood out as an individual player.
He was invited to the Community Rookie trials to compete against 20 other players for the coveted rookie contract with the Sydney side.
“I think I have an even shot,” Sultan said. “There is 20 players, I’m just going to give it my best on the day.”
Born in Bangladesh, Sultan’s family moved to Australia when he was just five years old.
He said he’d been playing cricket “since I could walk”.
His first competitive team was the Plumpton Glendenning Junior Cricket Club which he began representing when he was 12.
With the chance of a professional career just a trial away, Sultan said for the moment he would like to get into the Thunder.
While he doesn’t have a favourite player, Sultan said he drew inspiration from different players.
“As a batsman, I like Michael Clarke. All-rounder – I like Andrew Symonds,” he said.
