The Penrith Swans are the latest community club to adopt the Giants name and colours, following in the footsteps of their club ambassador Shane Mumford.
The Penrith Swans will now be known as the Penrith Giants when they compete in the Greater Western Sydney Junior competition this season.
Club ambassador Shane Mumford, who joined the Giants after playing 79 games with the Sydney Swans, welcomed the rebranding.
“I think the name change is a fantastic idea,” Mumford said.
“This will be my second season at the club now and I haven’t looked back since swapping from the Swans to the Giants.
“Penrith Juniors are a great club and I always enjoy heading there as part of my ambassador role. It’s great to have them on board now officially.”
Penrith Giants president Kylie O’Connor said aligning with the Giants would secure the long-term future of the junior club.
“Most of our players are actually Giants supporters, so it’s a really good move for our club, because it brands us to what the kids are actually interested in from our area,” O’Connor said.
“The Giants offer the local clubs a great deal of support, and I feel the kids then affiliate with that and feel they’re part of something bigger.
“I think it’s important when kids join a sporting club that they do feel like they are part of a family and the Giants have done that really well.”
O’Connor said the name change was a long process the club had been working on for two years.
“This is not a decision we took likely, but it was certainly well supported across the whole club,” she said.
“There’s an exciting feeling around the club and we look forward to continuing our great relationship with the Giants well into the future.”
Penrith joins other western Sydney clubs including Macarthur, Concord and Auburn who have partnered with the AFL’s newest team.
The club is hosting a registration day at Greygums Oval, Cranebrook, on Saturday, February 7, from 11am-2pm. More Info: PenrithJAFC.com.au
