AFTER amassing 618 points this season, it’s no surprise the formidable Lalor Park Kookas under-12 side has been undefeated for the past two years.

The Division 2 side claimed back-to-back premierships after thrashing the Toongabbie Tigers 40-20 in last month’s decider at Merrylands. They also notched up their highest score of the season – 58-6 – against the Tigers.

Centre Reece Davison was the team’s leading tryscorer, crossing the line 36 times, but all players have had the chance to add four points to a game.

Proud coach Andy Davison, whose twin sons Reece and Jamie are part of the side, nominated the Kookas for the Rebel-sponsored Junior Sports Star Team Spirit awards.

“During the season a couple of boys haven’t had the opportunity to score a try and the other boys that have passed the ball on when they didn’t have to, just so they all could have that experience of scoring a try for the team,’’ Andy said.

“They show great sportsmanship on the field, not only to the opposition, but also to one another in the team. There’s hardly any kids that miss training – they’re here rain hail or shine.’’

Much of their try-scoring prowess is thanks to second rower Niwhai Puru, who set up several tries for Reece.

“They just seem to gel,’’ coach Andy said. “They just seem to read each other.”

The team’s enthusiasm and results have lifted the club, with many of the players transferring from the Quakers Hill Destroyers and Kellyville Bushrangers during the past two seasons.

Davison has also praised the parents for being instrumental in the turnaround.

“I think if we’ve got enough good parents at the forefront more will follow but they’re a good bunch of kids – they’re easy to train,’’ he said. The side will play in Division 1 next year.

“It will be a challenge but they might need a couple of losses to appreciate the wins again,’’ Andy said.
