KING  Davidson is a man on a mission — to act as a role model for kids doing it tough.

The Tregear southpaw believes boxing in particular, and sport in general, can turn around the lives of young men falling in with the wrong crowd and drifting into dangerous pathways.

He wants to get them out of the pubs and clubs and into the UTC gym where he trains at St Marys.

“I want to show them that no matter what you go through, you can be whoever you want to be,” said Nigerian-born Davidson, who moved to Australia 10 years ago and has lived in Tregear with his wife Afsa for the past two years.

“I want to inspire our youth to stay out of trouble, to stay out of the pubs and clubs, stay away from smoking, drinking and doing drugs.

“There is hope. You can step up in life and be a great person.

“I see some guys sitting around St Marys station wasting their time. They should head to the gym.”

Davidson, a former Australian, WBO African and WBO international light heavyweight champion, has returned home from a rare defeat in Germany, beaten on points over 10 rounds by Nuremberg local Robert Talarek.

It was only his second loss, against 19 victories, in his 21 fights as a professional.

But he is far from discouraged, and is looking forward to his next bout in Canada in September, heading overseas again because “no-one in Australia wants to fight me”.

“I’m still in my prime,” said the 31-year-old, who won a gold medal at the 2003 All African Games, a bronze at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and was a quarter-finalist at Melbourne’s Commonwealth Games in 2006.
