Australian swimming sensation James Magnussen was on hand at Samuel Terry Public School last week to launch Penrith’s first Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon with NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres.

Magnussen said that inactivity was a big problem for kids and events such as the triathlon would help fix the problem.

“I think it’s about being fit and healthy and active, you meet a lot of friends when you’re doing sport, it’s a lot of fun. It should not be viewed as something that’s hard,” the Olympian said.

“There are a lot of big stars and sports teams that have come out of this region, so I’m sure it will be great for the area.”

The Triathlon will be on January 25 at the Regatta Centre and is designed for kids aged 7-15 no matter their ability.

“I think it’s a great event, kids can come out and have a try, it’s not too serious and everyone gets a gold medal at the end,” Magnussen said.

Stuart Ayres said he was proud as the member for Penrith and the minister for sport to bring this event to the region.

“This is a fantastic result for the region. A big investment by the Government, $70000, to kick off what is a big event,” Mr Ayres said.

“It’s just another opportunity to showcase the really fantastic resource we have in the Regatta Centre.”

Australia finished 14th of 15 countries studied in the Global Report Card on Kids’ Physical Activity Worldwide, with Aussies listed as the third worst in terms of their screen-time levels.

“It promotes a lot of those really important messages particularly to young people and to parents,” Mr Ayres said of the Kids TRYathlon.

“Not only will the Kids TRYathlon be on, but lots of other sports will be participating on the day so they’ll be able to try those out as well.

“It’s an opportunity for everyone to embrace this fantastic resource of the Regatta Centre, and at the same time encourage kids to be active.”
