SOCCER and rugby league might dominate sport in the western suburbs but Quakers Hill’s Logan Owen’s skill is executed impressively in the gymnastics arena.
The 11-year-old has excelled in the sport that traditionally attracts athletes from the eastern suburbs, many who train alongside him at Rooty Hill’s Sydney Gymnastic and Aquatic Centre.
“It’s great to have a local boy from western Sydney — it’s a pretty unusual sport in the area,’’ his coach and high performance manager at SGAC, Yusuf Topari, said.
But Logan is no token performer — he claimed silver overall in the under-12s at the Australian Gymnastics Championships recently.
The Marayong Public School Year 6 student is an all-rounder and impressed in a variety of apparatuses while competing in the Level 7 category.
With a forte on the rings and parallel bars, he also gained gold for the team event, as well as bronze on the high bar and floor.
He is now using the result as motivation to go one better and snag gold during the Valeri Liukin Invitational competition in Texas.
“I think it’s made him really hungry for the competition in December and he got back into the gym straight away and is working even harder,’’ Topari said.
