SMOKING might have been banned in public places – but not at Eastern Creek this weekend.

Plumes of rubber smoke from cars, along with screeching tyres and roaring engines, will be on display as Australia’s top drifters debut at the Sydney Motorsport Park SuperSprint V8 Supercars event.

The Hi-Tec Drifting Australia series has been officially sanctioned by CAMS, the Confederation of Australian Motorsports.

At the Supercars event, Quakers Hill driver Scott “MasterChef” Schembri and partner James Abbott, of Glenwood, will demonstrate why this new sport has become a massively popular attraction.

Drifting sees cars compete to win points based on speed, angles, showmanship and taking corners.

Schembri, 29, has been busy preparing for the big weekend, putting the finishing touches to his 550hp Nissan 180sx Trento car.

He’s known as MasterChef because he “produces a lot of smoke” and cooks his tyres.

“I’ve been known as a very aggressive driver,” he said.

“I’m a showman. But it is also very technical, you can’t make mistakes.”

V8 Supercars chief executive James Warburton said the addition of drifting to the three-day event was a bonus.

“Drifting is known for its action, theatre and drama,” he said.

“The drivers are highly skilled as pairs of cars race in proximity to each other to ensure they receive maximum points from the judges.”

Drifting events will be conducted on the Friday and Saturday nights of the Sydney Motorsport Park SuperSprint V8 weekend.
