GOING into a race relaxed goes a long way for athlete Shane Munaweera.

Shane, 12, of Glenmore Park, came second in long jump and discus and third in the 100m and 200m at the Little Athletics state track and field championships.

The results come off the back of winning a bronze medal in the 4x100m relay at the Australian youth and junior athletics championships in Perth last month.

Shane said keeping calm was paramount to his success.

"For most of the events I am pretty relaxed and confident going in, as I have trained well," he said. "It was my first time at nationals and I am happy with how my year has gone."

He also plays AFL for the Glenmore Park/Emu Plains Lions and cricket for Glenmore Park.

"I do want to be an Olympian one day," he said.

Shane is the first nominee for the 2013 Penrith Press Junior Sports Star award, sponsored by Rebel.
