Penrith Panthers yongsters to have a chance to show abilities in trial

PENRITH Panthers' fringe first graders have the chance to impress coach Ivan Cleary when the team face the Wests Tigers in their first trial tonight at Carrington Park, Bathurst.

Cleary named a side full of young talent as well as giving players a chance to make their case for a first grade position.

"It's a good opportunity to get some guys to play at a higher level," Cleary told the Press.

"The main aim is not so much about the scoreline but succeeding at the things we practised and we think are stepping stones to winning games.

"Obviously with the amount of guys we've got playing there will be a bit of chopping and changing and giving young guys an opportunity.

"We've got four of our five players from our rookie program last year in Reagan Campbell-Gillard, George Jennings, Tony Satini and Daniel Foster, who have been given an opportunity."

Centre Geoff Daniela will captain the side with Nathan Smith returning after a broken leg from early last year.

"It was round four last year (that Smith broke his leg) so it has been a long time since he's played," Cleary said.

"When you are out of the game a long time it is good to get that first hit-out."

The match is scheduled to kick off at 6.30pm.
