NEPEAN FC women's coach James Rankine expects his team to be competitive despite their poor start to the Women's State League competition.

A 9-1 loss to Parramatta Lady Hawks last Sunday was a rude awakening to Nepean FC, who have a fairly new squad.

"Going into the game I didn't take into account how nervous some of our players were," Rankine said.

"To be fair we have 11 players who have never played at this level before.

"It was also really our first game we have played together as a few trials were washed out and on some of our Saturday trials we were down on numbers."

Nepean FC face another tough task against Gladesville Ravens on Sunday.

Rankine doesn't expect another big loss this season.

"We still were trying to do what we had aimed for, so I am confident we will be competitive," he said.

"In saying that I know we have a tough draw for the opening rounds."
