FORMER Penrith Panther Mark Geyer hopes his story can provide "a bit of hope" to western Sydney youth after being honoured for his service to rugby league and the community.

Known as one of the hard-men of his sport, Geyer received a Medal of the Order of Australia on Australia Day for service to charity and his dedication to rugby league, after representing at club, state and national level throughout his career from 1987 to 2000.

"When I had to retire in 2000, I didn't really have a plan B. I found myself selling jerseys out of the back of a car for 12 months, and developed a bit of depression and anxiety," the South Penrith resident said.

"But from there, I was sort of drawn to charities because that's what gave me the most pleasure."

Geyer has established a career in the media and uses his high profile to help serve the community.

The 45-year-old said he was most proud of his work behind the scenes helping different charities.

"Doing it gives you such a great feeling, but to be recognised (with an OAM) is a real honour," Geyer said.

"I have lived in Penrith for years so hopefully a few kids might look at me as an example and give them a bit of hope."

CHARITY WORK

Mark Geyer organised the Legends of Origin Charity Match in 2011, raising almost $500,000, to support to the Queensland Floods recovery effort.

He has supported police and community youth clubs, Work Direction, D-Sport, the Yellow Ribbon Foundation, and the Fight For Life charity boxing event, and has served as an ambassador for Save Our Sons and The Children's Hospital at Westmead.
