VOLUNTEERING for 37 years with the Colyton-Mt Druitt Colts Rugby League Club has seen president Peter Martin recognised at NewsLocal's Junior Sport Star Award ceremony.

The Standard's Service to Sport winner was crowned the overall winner of the category at the special ceremony at Waterview Convention Centre at Sydney Olympic Park on Wednesday night.

Mr Martin, of Rooty Hill, said winning the award was a shock.

"It was from out of left field," Mr Martin said.

He played rugby league growing up and remained involved with the game. More than 50 years later, he is the Colts' president.

He has also been a coach, manager and mentor for younger players.

Other duties in his volunteering roles have included marking fields and cooking barbecues. With many highlights during his involvement with rugby league, Mr Martin said volunteering was extremely rewarding.

"You get the satisfaction of seeing players achieve what they achieve; seeing them go on to a high level."

In his time, Mr Martin's club has produced NRL stars including Craig Gower and Tony Butterfield.
