ERSKINE Park resident Alex Scollard will compete in the first international powerchair football championship to be held at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, starting tomorrow.
Alex, 16, has Duchenne muscular dystrophy and is part of a team of athletes with disabilities to compete in the Asia Pacific Oceania 2013 Powerchair Football zone Championship, which finishes on Saturday.
"I am very proud to represent my country by playing powerchair football, which is a sport that I love," Alex said.
Powerchair football uses electric wheelchairs with guards that are used to hit soccer balls.
After playing at the 2011 World Cup in Paris, Alex said the opportunity to play in Australia was huge.
"I'll try and make Australia proud. Hopefully plenty of people come watch," he said.
Australia plays Singapore and Japan in the event.
