THE wheels are in motion for a bicycle superhighway between the city and Bondi Junction after the City of Sydney revealed plans for a separated cycleway along Moore Park Rd.
The long awaited, two-way cycleway would connect South Dowling St with Lang Rd and link into the existing cycle path on Oxford St that runs along the northern edge of Centennial Park to York Rd.
On the city side, it would feed into the Bourke St cycleway via existing shared paths on Fitzroy St.
Cycling groups have applauded the State government-funded plan and called on Waverley Council to get cracking on the remaining part of the crucial regional link to Bondi Junction.
Sydney Mayor Clover Moore said the project also included wider footpaths, safer crossings, better street lighting and improved access to the Sydney Cricket Ground and Allianz Stadium.
“Creating infrastructure that encourages more people to walk or ride helps free up space on our crowded public transport and roads,” she said.
Waverley Council’s preferred route to Bondi Junction is along Oxford St between York Rd and Bondi Rd via Spring St.
Roads and Maritime Services have agreed to fully fund a cycleway between York Rd and Bronte Rd but would only half fund the link between Bronte Rd and Adelaide St, which would later connect to Bondi Rd.
Last month Waverley Council resolved to write to the State Government asking it to fund the whole project “on the basis that it is an integral connection between Bondi Junction and the CBD”.
BIKEast spokesman Adrian Boss welcomed the plan for a separated cycleway on Moore Park Rd but said the cycle path should be widened from 2.4m to 3m by reducing the space allocated for trees.
He also called for the separated cycleway to be extended down Fitzroy St to the Bourke St cycleway rather than using the existing shared paths to complete the connection as they were too “narrow”.
“We want the City of Sydney to improve their design to make sure it is safe and can work for the next 30 years,” Mr Boss said.
“And we want Waverley Council to get on with it and complete the link to Bondi Junction on their side.”
Other improvements include more footpath space for people walking along Moore Park Road during events and a bus stop upgrade between Cook and Lang Rds.
Construction is set to start in the middle of next year and finish in mid 2019.
The Government and the City of Sydney are investigating the feasibility of a separated cycleway at Fitzroy Street, to be constructed after light rail is complete.
