Waverley bowlers may be “club hopping” at the moment with their beloved bowlo currently a construction site, but when it’s completed they’re set to be the envy of every other club in Sydney.
While soggy chips and burnt parmies may be on the menu at most suburban bowlos, the Waverley club will instead boast a chef curated menu fit for eastern suburbs soirees.
Developer Mirvac broke ground in April on its $83 million project on the Birrell St site which will boast both a shiny new club and bowling greens and a 55 apartment seniors living development.
The club, which is owned by the Sydney Rooster’s Easts Group, will reopen in time for its 130 year anniversary in September 2023.
Easts CEO Joe Kelly said the agreement with Mirvac was to provide them with a plush new club as a condition of the redevelopment.
Mr Kelly said while the final interior fit-out was still under wraps he was now able to reveal new details about the glitzy clubhouse.
“We will have a niche hospitality offering with both indoor and outdoor dining, a contemporary cafe, bistro and bar,” Mr Kelly said.
“For us it will be all about the food and beverage. It will be about providing an elevated offering using local produce where possible.
“We’ll be providing a look and feel that’s very contemporary and less like a ‘traditional’ bowling club and more what the local demographic and community of the eastern suburbs are looking for.”
Mr Kelly said he anticipated the new club being in hot demand for private functions and likened it to the recently completed Easts club revamp in Bondi Junction.
Easts menu boasts dishes such as Grilled Aromatic Spiced Spatchcock and Blue Swimmer Crab Tagliolini – a far cry from the fare at most bowlos.
“The club will also have two bowling greens – a championship bowling green and synthetic green so providing facilities to bowlers which will be totally first class and, respectfully to others, it will be the best bowls club in Sydney.”
Mirvac’s head of residential Stuart Penklis said the luxury seniors apartments will go to market later this year.
He revealed while no price guide had been set just yet, they were already fielding numerous inquiries – mostly from locals looking to downsize.
“By end of this year we will see a significant amount of activity on site as the buildings start to come out of the ground,” Mr Penklis said.
“There’s already a huge flurry of work on the site. A significant amount of works are going on and the site has certainly transformed.
“Ultimately the development is very low scale and there are lots of special space designed not only for residents but the whole community.”
